A wood fence adds privacy, security, and curb appeal to your property, but the quality of the installation determines whether it lasts 10 years or 30. Proper wood fence installation starts with planning, permits, and material selection long before the first post goes into the ground. Whether you are hiring a contractor or tackling this as a weekend project, understanding the full process helps you avoid costly mistakes.
Planning and Permits
Before buying a single board, contact your local building department to check fence height restrictions, setback requirements, and permit obligations. Most residential areas allow 6-foot privacy fences in backyards and 4-foot fences in front yards, but HOA rules may impose additional restrictions on material, color, and style. A fence permit typically costs $20 to $75 and takes 1 to 3 weeks to process.
Call 811 at least 48 hours before digging to have underground utilities marked for free. Hitting a buried gas line, electrical cable, or irrigation pipe during post hole digging is dangerous and expensive. A property survey ($300 to $600) is worth the investment if your property lines are unclear, because building even a few inches over the line can result in a forced teardown.
Choosing Your Wood
The three most common species for residential fencing are pressure-treated pine, western red cedar, and redwood. Each has trade-offs in price, appearance, and durability.
- Pressure-treated pine: Most affordable at $1.50 to $3.00 per linear foot for pickets. Treated with preservatives that resist rot and insects. Starts out with a greenish tint that weathers to gray unless stained. Lasts 15 to 20 years.
- Western red cedar: Naturally rot-resistant with a warm reddish-brown color. Costs $3.00 to $6.00 per linear foot. Does not require chemical treatment. Lasts 15 to 25 years with periodic staining.
- Redwood: Premium option at $5.00 to $10.00 per linear foot. Beautiful grain pattern and excellent natural durability. Primarily available in western states. Lasts 20 to 30 years.
Regardless of species, always use pressure-treated posts for the below-grade portion that contacts soil. Even naturally rot-resistant cedar and redwood benefit from treated posts to prevent premature decay at the ground line where moisture is constant.
Setting Posts Correctly
Post installation is the most critical phase of any wood fence installation. Improperly set posts lead to leaning, sagging, and premature failure. Dig post holes to a depth of one-third the total post length plus 6 inches for gravel drainage. For a 6-foot fence using 8-foot posts, that means holes 32 inches deep and 8 to 12 inches in diameter.
Add 4 to 6 inches of gravel to the bottom of each hole for drainage. Set the post plumb using a level on two adjacent sides, then fill with fast-setting concrete (one to two bags per hole). Slope the concrete slightly above grade to shed water away from the post. Allow 24 to 48 hours of curing before attaching rails and pickets.
Space posts 6 to 8 feet apart on center. Wider spacing saves on posts and concrete but requires heavier rails to prevent sagging between posts. The standard 8-foot spacing works with 2×4 rails, while 6-foot spacing is better for high-wind areas and fences taller than 6 feet.
Attaching Rails and Pickets
Horizontal rails connect the posts and support the pickets. Use 2×4 lumber for rails, installing three rails for fences over 5 feet tall (top, middle, and bottom) and two rails for shorter fences. Attach rails to posts using galvanized rail brackets ($2 to $4 each) or by toe-nailing with 3-inch galvanized screws. Rail brackets provide a stronger, more consistent connection.
Attach pickets to rails using two galvanized or stainless steel screws per rail connection (six screws per picket for a three-rail fence). Use a spacer jig to maintain consistent gaps between pickets. For a full-privacy fence, butt pickets tightly together or overlap them in a board-on-board pattern. Pre-drill screw holes near the ends of pickets to prevent splitting.
Gates That Actually Work
Gates are the most failure-prone component of any fence. Build the gate frame from 2×4 lumber with a diagonal cross-brace running from the bottom hinge side to the top latch side. This brace prevents the gate from sagging over time. Use heavy-duty strap hinges or T-hinges rated for the gate’s weight, and mount them with lag bolts rather than screws for maximum holding power.
Size the gate opening 1/2 inch wider than the gate frame on each side to allow for wood expansion and ensure smooth operation year-round. Self-closing spring hinges ($10 to $20 per pair) are required by code in many jurisdictions for pool fencing and are a practical upgrade for any gate.
Staining and Sealing
New pressure-treated lumber needs to dry for 2 to 4 weeks before accepting stain. Cedar and redwood can be stained immediately but also look beautiful when left to weather naturally. A quality penetrating stain with UV protection ($25 to $50 per gallon) extends the life of any wood fence by 5 to 10 years and maintains the wood’s color rather than allowing it to turn gray.
Apply stain with a pump sprayer for speed, then back-brush with a natural bristle brush to work the product into the grain. Reapply every 2 to 3 years for optimal protection. Avoid film-forming finishes like paint and solid stains on fence pickets, as they peel and require scraping before recoating.
