Open up an electrical box in a mid-century home and you’ll often find a tangled history lesson — cloth-jacketed cables, twisted splices, and color codes that don’t match anything in a modern code book. The Three Wiring Types You’ll Likely Find

Knob-and-Tube: The Easiest to Spot
Knob-and-tube wiring uses two separate conductors — a black “hot” and a white “neutral” — running parallel about 6 to 12 inches apart.
