Controlling one light from two different locations is something most homeowners take for granted until the circuit stops working. The 3 way light switch setup uses a pair of special switches wired together with traveler wires, and understanding this arrangement is the key to both installation and troubleshooting. Understanding the 3-Way Circuit
A standard light switch has two terminals: one for the incoming hot wire and one for the outgoing wire to the fixture. A 3 way light switch has three screw terminals plus a ground. The darker-colored screw is the “common” terminal, and the two lighter screws are the “traveler” terminals.
Two 3-way switches work together by routing power through a pair of traveler wires. At any given moment, one of the two travelers is hot. Flipping either switch redirects power to the other traveler. If the path through both switches connects the power source to the light fixture, the light turns on. Break that path at either switch, and the light turns off. This elegant design means both switches always function correctly regardless of the other switch’s position.
Identifying the Common Terminal
The common terminal is the most important wire connection in a 3-way circuit, and mixing it up with a traveler is the number-one wiring mistake. On most switches, the common screw is a different color: black or dark brass compared to the lighter brass traveler screws. Some manufacturers stamp “COM” near the terminal. If you cannot identify it visually, check the switch packaging or look up the model number online.

- Power source to Switch 1: A standard 14/2 (or 12/2 for 20-amp circuits) cable carrying hot, neutral, and ground
- Switch 1 to Switch 2: A 14/3 cable carrying two travelers, a neutral, and a ground
- Switch 2 to light fixture: A standard 14/2 cable carrying the switched hot, neutral, and ground
At Switch 1, the incoming hot wire connects to the common terminal. The two travelers from the 14/3 cable connect to the traveler terminals. At Switch 2, the wire going to the light fixture connects to the common terminal, and the same two travelers from the 14/3 cable connect to the traveler terminals. All neutral wires connect to each other (not to the switch) with wire nuts in each box.

When a 3-way circuit stops working, the diagnosis follows a logical sequence. Start with the simplest causes and work toward more complex ones.
Light Stays Off in All Positions
Check the light bulb first. Then verify the circuit breaker has not tripped. If the breaker is fine, remove both switch cover plates and use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm power is reaching the first switch box. No voltage at the box means a wiring issue upstream of the switches.
Light Stays On and Cannot Be Turned Off
This almost always indicates that a traveler wire has been connected to the common terminal on one of the switches. Remove both switches and verify that the common terminal on each switch connects to the correct wire: power-in at the first switch, fixture-out at the second switch.
One Switch Works, the Other Does Not
A failed switch is the most likely cause. Test each switch with a multimeter set to continuity. With the probes on the common terminal and one traveler, toggle the switch. Continuity should shift between the two travelers. If one position shows no continuity on either traveler, the switch mechanism has failed internally. Upgrading to Smart Switches
Smart 3-way configurations require one “master” smart switch and one compatible companion or remote switch. You cannot simply install two identical smart switches.
