Pouring thousands of dollars into double drywall and resilient channel without sealing the perimeter is like buying a scuba tank with a pinhole in the hose. Acoustic caulk is the rubbery, non-hardening sealant that fills every gap where sound can sneak from one space to another, and skipping it can cut the performance of a soundproofed wall by 10 to 15 STC points. A single $8 tube covers roughly 50 linear feet and often delivers a bigger acoustic return than the drywall itself.
What Acoustic Caulk Actually Is
Acoustic caulk is a permanently flexible, non-hardening sealant formulated to stay pliable for the lifetime of the assembly. Unlike standard latex or silicone caulks that cure into a hard film, acoustic caulk remains elastic, which lets it maintain a seal through the small movements walls make from seasonal temperature swings and framing shrinkage. The flexibility is what preserves the acoustic seal long after installation.
How Sound Leaks Through Gaps
Sound behaves like water. A tiny gap at the bottom plate, the electrical box perimeter, or the joint between drywall and ceiling creates a direct air path, and air-transmitted sound follows it with almost no attenuation.
