Why Cabinets Punish Ordinary Primer

Wall primer is engineered for porous drywall. Cabinet surfaces are the opposite: factory-finished doors are sprayed with catalyzed conversion varnish or UV-cured coatings so hard and slick that latex paint beads on them like water on a waxed car. Add contamination — cooking grease, silicone furniture polish, hand oils — and you have a surface that actively rejects coatings. A true bonding cabinet primer does three jobs at once: it grips a glossy nonporous surface mechanically and chemically, it seals wood tannins and grease residue so they cannot bleed through, and it creates a uniformly porous base the topcoat can bite into. No wall primer, and no “paint and primer in one,” does all three.

The Three Primer Families for Cabinets

Pigmented shellac is the gold standard for problem cabinets. Zinsser B-I-N sticks to virtually anything — conversion varnish, polyurethane, even glass — and it is the only primer class that reliably blocks tannin bleed from oak and stains from decades of kitchen grime in one coat. It dries in 20 minutes, sands to powder in 45, and can be topcoated the same hour. The trade-offs are real: strong ammonia-alcohol odor (ventilate hard, wear an organic-vapor respirator), a brittle film that wants a flexible topcoat over it, and cleanup requiring ammonia or denatured alcohol. Modern waterborne bonding primers changed the game for DIYers. Matching Primer to Your Cabinet Surface

  • Factory-finished wood (conversion varnish): B-I-N or STIX after scuff sanding. Both pass the crosshatch tape test that latex primers fail.
  • Oak, cherry, or any tannin-heavy wood: B-I-N first choice, Cover Stain second. Two coats on raw or worn areas — tannin bleed often waits for the second day of humidity to appear.

  • Thermofoil doors: The riskiest substrate. If the vinyl skin is intact and tight, degrease, scuff very lightly, and use STIX. If the foil is peeling at edges, priming will not save it — replace or strip those doors.
  • MDF (including new Shaker center panels): B-I-N seals the fuzzy routed edges best; two coats on machined profiles, sanded with 220 between.
  • Previously painted cabinets in sound condition: Degrease, sand, and any of the three families works; match the primer to whether the old paint is oil (test with an alcohol swab — latex softens, oil does not).

The Prep Sequence That Makes Primer Stick

Primer failures usually trace back to skipped prep, not bad product. The professional order is clean, then sand, then clean again:

  1. Degrease everything. Krud Kutter, Dirtex, or TSP-substitute scrubbed on with a Scotch-Brite pad, then rinsed with clean water twice.   3. Scuff sand. 220-grit on a sanding sponge, or 180 on a random-orbit sander for flat panels. You are not stripping — you are dulling every square inch of sheen. Gray Scotch-Brite reaches profiled edges.
  4. Vacuum and tack. Vacuum with a brush attachment, then wipe with a barely damp microfiber. Dust under primer telegraphs through every subsequent coat.
  5. Fill and caulk after priming, not before. Prime first, then fill dings with glazing putty and spot-prime — filler sticks better to primer than to slick finish, and primer reveals defects you missed.

Spray vs Brush and Roll

Sprayed primer (HVLP or an airless with a 210–310 fine-finish tip) delivers the factory look and gets into door profiles evenly, but demands masking, a spray zone, and straining shellac through a fine mesh filter. Brushing and rolling is entirely respectable if you use the right tools: a 2″ angled synthetic brush (Purdy Clearcut) for profiles and a 4″ microfiber or foam mini-roller for flats, tipping off lightly in the direction of the grain. B-I-N is the hardest to brush because of flash time; STIX and Cover Stain are far more forgiving. Dry Time vs Cure Time — the Trap That Ruins Kitchens

Recoat time is when you can paint over the primer. Cure time is when the whole system reaches full hardness — and they are wildly different numbers. B-I-N recoats in 45 minutes; STIX in 3 to 4 hours (longer in humidity); Cover Stain realistically overnight. But the finished system — primer plus two coats of a cabinet enamel like Benjamin Moore Advance or SW Emerald Urethane — takes 21 to 30 days to fully cure. Rehang doors after 24 to 48 hours, but add felt bumpers, close doors gently, and avoid wiping or stacking anything against painted faces for the first two weeks. How Much Primer a Kitchen Actually Takes

Plan quantities before the store run. A typical 10 x 10 kitchen — roughly 25 doors and drawer fronts plus face frames and end panels — presents about 350 to 450 square feet of paintable surface counting both sides of the doors. At the 300-to-400 sq ft per gallon coverage typical of B-I-N and STIX, one gallon handles a single full coat with a little left for spot-priming; buy two if oak or heavy stains push you to two coats, and keep a quart of the same product on the shelf for touch-ups after the inevitable move-in dings.
