What Resurfacing Actually Is

Cracks from 1/16 to 1/4 inch should be routed slightly wider with a grinder, filled with a polyurea or epoxy crack filler (Rapid Set Crack Repair, Sikadur), sanded flush, and then coated. Anything wider, offset in height, or visibly growing season to season is a moving structural crack, and here’s the hard truth: no rigid overlay stops a slab from moving. Caring for a Resurfaced Slab

An overlay’s thin cross-section makes maintenance habits matter more than they did on the bare slab. Skip metal snow shovels the first winter and go easy on deicers permanently — calcium chloride is gentler than rock salt, and sand is gentler than both. Reseal decorative surfaces on schedule, wash oil spots promptly, and keep downspouts from concentrating flow across the surface, since running water erodes a 1/8-inch layer far faster than a 4-inch slab. Treat it well and the maintenance is fifteen minutes a season.

Costs, Lifespan, and the Honest Verdict

DIY resurfacing of a 500-square-foot driveway costs roughly $400 to $900 in materials and a hard weekend. Professional plain-gray resurfacing runs $3 to $7 per square foot; decorative systems $7 to $20. Done over a sound slab with real prep, an overlay lasts 10 to 25 years — the thin skim coats at the short end, thick stamped systems at the long end — versus 30-plus for new concrete. The verdict is straightforward: resurfacing is the best money in concrete when the slab is structurally healthy and the problems are skin-deep. It’s wasted money over active cracks, movement, or contamination the coating can’t see.
