Walk into any 1970s ranch house and pull off an outlet cover. The two black wires twisted under one screw and the two white wires under another tell you immediately that you are looking at a classic daisy chain layout. Each box has two cables: one incoming and one outgoing, except for the very last box in the chain, which has only the incoming cable.
Despite the word series, household daisy chain outlets remain electrically in parallel for the loads plugged into them. Each receptacle gets the full 120 volts because the hot and neutral wires connect through, not through a series resistor. The chain refers only to the physical routing of cable, not to the electrical relationship between the connected devices.
How the Wires Connect at Each Box
At every middle box in a daisy chain, four wires arrive: incoming hot black, incoming neutral white, outgoing hot black, and outgoing neutral white. Plus two ground wires, one from each cable.
The traditional installation method uses the outlet itself as a connection point, with the incoming and outgoing hot wires under the two brass screws and the white wires under the two silver screws.
