Door frame construction is one of those skills that looks deceptively simple until you hang a door that scrapes the floor, swings open on its own, or leaves an uneven gap down one side. A door is only as good as the frame around it, and that frame is really two systems working together: the structural rough opening built into the wall and the finished jamb assembly that holds the door. Understanding how both go together, and how the pieces relate, lets you frame an opening correctly, troubleshoot a sticking door, or talk intelligently with a contractor. Anatomy of a Door Frame

Two layers make up the complete assembly. The first is the structural framing inside the wall:

  • Rough opening: The framed hole in the wall, intentionally larger than the door to allow for the jamb and shimming.
  • King studs: Full-height studs on each side that run from the bottom plate to the top plate and anchor the opening.
  • Jack studs (trimmer studs): Shorter studs nailed to the inside of the king studs; they support the ends of the header and set the opening width.

The second layer is the finished jamb assembly that you actually see and that the door hangs from:

  • Stop: A thin strip on the jamb that the door closes against so it cannot swing through.
  • Casing (trim): The molding that covers the gap between the jamb and the wall.
  • Sill and threshold: On exterior doors, the bottom piece you step over, paired with weatherstripping to seal against air and water.

Sizing the Rough Opening

Getting the rough opening right is the foundation of the whole job. The standard rule is to frame the opening larger than the door slab itself to leave room for the jamb thickness, shims, and leveling adjustments. A common approach is to make the rough opening about 2 inches wider than the door width and roughly 2 to 2.5 inches taller than the door height. For a 30-inch door, for example, you would frame a rough opening around 32 inches wide. That extra space is essential; without it, you have no room to shim the frame plumb and level inside an imperfect wall.

Framing the Opening

The structural opening is assembled as part of the wall framing. The king studs are set first at the correct spacing. Jack studs are then nailed against the inside faces of the king studs, cut to the height that will support the header. The header drops onto the jack studs, and cripple studs fill the space from the header up to the top plate. The result is a rigid, load-bearing rectangle ready to receive the finished frame. Where the door is in a load-bearing wall, the header must be sized for the span and the load above it, which is why larger openings use deeper headers.

Materials

Interior jambs are commonly made from finger-jointed pine, poplar, or MDF. Pine and poplar take paint and stain well and resist dents better than MDF, while MDF is smooth, stable, and economical for painted finishes. Exterior door frames need more durable, weather-resistant materials and often incorporate a composite or treated sill and integrated weatherstripping to handle moisture and temperature swings. The structural studs and headers are typically dimensional lumber, with engineered lumber used for longer header spans.

Pre-Hung vs. Slab Doors

Pre-Hung Doors

A pre-hung door arrives as a complete unit: the door already hinged inside a finished jamb assembly, often with the stop and sometimes the casing attached. You set the whole unit into the rough opening as one piece. This is by far the easier route for most homeowners because the critical relationship between door and jamb is already established at the factory.

Slab Doors

A slab door is just the door panel with no frame and no hinges mortised. You use a slab when you are replacing a door into an existing, good jamb, but it requires you to mortise hinges, bore for the latch, and align everything yourself. It demands more precision and the right tools.

Installation Basics

Whether pre-hung or built up from a slab, the same principles govern a frame that works:

  1. Set the frame in the rough opening and get the hinge-side jamb plumb first, checking with a level in both directions.
  2. Shim behind the jamb at each hinge location and at the latch location, plus near the top and bottom, using pairs of tapered shims so you can fine-tune without bowing the jamb.
  3. Confirm the reveal, the gap between the door edge and the jamb, is even all the way around, typically about 1/8 inch. A consistent reveal is the clearest sign the frame is true.
  4. Nail through the shims into the jack studs so the fasteners pin the jamb at its shimmed points, then trim the shims flush.
  5. Add casing to cover the gap, and on exterior doors, install and adjust the weatherstripping and threshold.

Tools and Materials

For a typical installation you will want a 4-foot level, a tape measure, tapered wood or composite shims, a hammer or finish nailer with appropriate nails, a drill, a utility knife to trim shims, and a square. A pre-hung unit, casing, and a small amount of caulk and filler round out the list. For slab work, add a chisel for mortising hinges and a hole saw or boring jig for the latch.

Common Mistakes

  • Out of plumb: If the hinge jamb leans even slightly, the door will swing open or closed on its own.
  • Racked frame: Twisting the frame so it is not square in the opening causes the door to bind in one corner and gap in another.
  • Reveal too tight: Set the gap too small and seasonal movement or a coat of paint will make the door rub and stick.
  • Over-nailing without shims: Driving fasteners through unsupported jamb spans bows the jamb inward and ruins the reveal.
