How to Frame a Window: Step-by-Step Guide

Whether you are adding a new window to an existing wall or framing one in new construction, getting the framing right is non-negotiable — it supports the weight above the opening and ensures your window installs squarely and operates smoothly for decades. Learning how to frame a window involves understanding headers, king studs, jack studs, cripple studs, and the rough opening dimensions that manufacturers specify for each window size. The framing takes 2-3 hours for an experienced DIYer and requires only basic carpentry tools.

Understanding Window Framing Components

  • Header: The horizontal beam that spans the top of the window opening and transfers the load above to the studs on each side. Sized based on the opening width and the load it carries
  • King studs: Full-height studs on each side of the opening that run from the bottom plate to the top plate. They support the ends of the header
  • Jack studs (trimmers): Shorter studs that sit inside the king studs and directly support the header from below. They define the height of the rough opening
  • Sill plate: The horizontal board at the bottom of the window opening
  • Cripple studs: Short studs above the header (between header and top plate) and below the sill plate (between sill and bottom plate) that maintain the standard 16-inch stud spacing

Determining the Rough Opening

The rough opening is the framed hole that the window sits in. Every window manufacturer specifies exact rough opening dimensions — typically 1/2 inch wider and 1/2 inch taller than the window unit. A 36×48-inch window typically requires a 36-1/2 × 48-1/2-inch rough opening. Always check the manufacturer’s spec sheet for the exact window you are installing — never assume standard sizing.

For replacement windows going into an existing framed opening, measure the existing rough opening width at the top, middle, and bottom. Measure height on both sides and in the center. Order the window based on the smallest dimension to ensure it fits. Shims fill small gaps during installation — a rough opening 1/4 to 1/2 inch larger than the window on each side is ideal.

Header Sizing

The header must be strong enough to carry the roof and floor loads above the window. The IRC prescribes minimum header sizes based on the opening width and the number of stories the header supports:

  • Up to 4 feet wide (one story above): Double 2×6 header
  • 4-6 feet wide (one story above): Double 2×8 header
  • 6-8 feet wide (one story above): Double 2×10 header
  • 8-10 feet wide (one story above): Double 2×12 header

Double headers are made by sandwiching a piece of 1/2-inch plywood between two dimensional lumber pieces and nailing them together. The plywood spacer brings the total header thickness to 3-1/2 inches — matching the width of a 2×4 stud wall. For 2×6 walls (5-1/2 inches), use a wider spacer or additional plywood layers.

Step-by-Step Framing Process

  1. Mark the layout. On the bottom plate, mark the center of the window opening. From center, measure half the rough opening width in each direction. Mark king stud locations at these points, then mark jack stud locations 1-1/2 inches inside each king stud
  2. Install king studs. Cut two full-height studs and nail them in position — toenail to the bottom plate with three 16d nails and face-nail or use a framing connector at the top plate
  3. Cut and install jack studs. Measure from the bottom plate to the bottom of the header location (rough opening height plus sill plate thickness). Cut two jack studs to this length and nail them to the inside face of each king stud with 10d nails every 12 inches
  4. Build and install the header. Cut two header boards to the rough opening width plus 3 inches (to rest on both jack studs). Sandwich plywood between them and nail together with 16d nails every 16 inches. Set the header on top of the jack studs and nail through the king studs into the header ends
  5. Install the sill plate. Cut a 2×4 or 2×6 to fit between the jack studs at the bottom of the rough opening. Level it and toenail to the jack studs
  6. Add cripple studs. Install short studs below the sill and above the header at 16-inch on-center spacing to maintain the wall’s structural grid
  7. Check the rough opening. Measure diagonals — they should be equal within 1/8 inch. Check plumb and level on all four sides

Framing in an Existing Wall

Adding a window to an existing wall requires cutting through the exterior siding and sheathing, which exposes the wall cavity. Before cutting, verify that no electrical wires, plumbing pipes, or HVAC ducts run through the target area. Use a stud finder and drill small exploratory holes if uncertain. Rerouting utilities adds $200-$500 to the project.

Temporarily support the load above the opening with a temporary wall built 2 feet inside the exterior wall before removing any existing studs. This prevents the ceiling and roof from sagging while you install the permanent header. Once the new framing is complete and the header is carrying the load, remove the temporary support wall.

Common Framing Mistakes

Undersizing the header is the most serious error and can cause sagging, cracked drywall, and stuck windows over time. When in doubt, upsize the header by one lumber dimension — the cost difference between a double 2×8 and a double 2×10 is under $10, and the stronger header provides a larger safety margin. Forgetting cripple studs above and below the opening violates code and leaves unsupported sections of wall sheathing and drywall that flex and crack. Always maintain the 16-inch stud spacing through the entire wall.
