Drain Fly Larva: How to Identify, Kill, and Prevent Them

Those small fuzzy flies hovering above the bathroom sink did not appear from thin air. They hatched from drain fly larva living in the slime that coats the inside of your pipes. Adult drain flies (also called moth flies, sewer flies, or filter flies) live just one to two weeks, but a single female lays 30-100 eggs that mature into adults within ten days. Miss the larvae and the cycle keeps going. Identify them early and the infestation ends within a week.

What Drain Fly Larva Actually Look Like

The larvae are 1/4 to 3/8 inch long, slender, and pale gray to translucent. They have a darker head end and breathing tube at the tail. You will rarely see them above the drain. They live submerged in the biofilm gunk inside drain traps, garbage disposals, sewer pipes, and floor drains. If you spot a small worm-like creature on top of standing water in a rarely-used drain, that is almost certainly the larva stage.

The adult fly is the obvious clue. About 1/8 inch long, fuzzy gray-tan body, and wings that fold over the body in a distinctive triangular shape, like a tiny moth.

Where the Larvae Live

Drain fly larva need three things: organic biofilm to feed on, moisture, and minimal disturbance. The most common breeding sites in homes:

  • Bathroom sink and tub drains, especially guest baths used infrequently
  • Kitchen garbage disposals with food residue trapped on splash guards
  • Floor drains in basements, laundry rooms, and utility rooms
  • Condensate lines from HVAC units that drain into utility sinks
  • Sump pump pits with stagnant water
  • Sewer cleanout caps that leak slightly

Less common but stubborn sources include slow leaks under refrigerators, crawlspace standing water, and septic vent pipes drying out and allowing odors and pests upstream.

Confirming the Source

Before treating, locate the breeding drain. Tape a piece of clear plastic wrap or a sticky note over the suspected drain overnight, leaving a corner open. If you find adult flies stuck to it the next morning, you have confirmed the source. Repeat across every drain until you find all active sites.

Multiple drains can breed simultaneously. Treating only one usually fails because adults migrate between sources.

How to Kill Drain Fly Larva

Boiling water alone rarely works. The biofilm coating protects larvae from heat, and most pipe runs cool the water before it reaches them. Use this three-step protocol instead:

  1. Mechanical scrubbing: Insert a stiff drain brush or coil snake and physically scrub the inside of the pipe walls, especially the trap. This breaks up the biofilm where eggs and larvae cling
  2. Enzyme drain cleaner: Pour 4 ounces of enzyme cleaner (Bio-Clean, InVade Bio Drain, or Earthworm) at night when no water flows. Enzymes digest the organic film over 6-8 hours
  3. Repeat for 5-7 nights: One treatment kills surface larvae but eggs deeper in the pipe will still hatch. A week of consecutive treatment breaks the lifecycle

For garbage disposals, run ice cubes mixed with kosher salt for 30 seconds, then scrub the rubber splash guard with a brush dipped in enzyme cleaner.

What Does Not Work (Despite Internet Claims)

Three popular hacks fail in real-world testing:

  • Bleach: Kills surface microbes but does not penetrate biofilm. Larvae survive deeper in the slime
  • Boiling water alone: Cools below lethal temperature before reaching deep pipe sections
  • Vinegar and baking soda: Fizz looks productive but neutralizes itself within seconds, no biofilm impact

Chemical drain cleaners (Drano, Liquid-Plumr) are also ineffective against drain fly larva because they target hair clogs, not biofilm.

Killing the Adult Flies

Adults outside the drain need separate treatment. A bowl of apple cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap traps them within 24 hours. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap punctured with small holes; flies crawl in but cannot escape. Set traps near every infested drain.

For larger infestations, a residual indoor insecticide like a pyrethrin spray applied along baseboards near drain locations will eliminate adults faster.

Prevention That Actually Sticks

Once cleared, prevent re-infestation with monthly maintenance. Run hot water through every drain weekly, including guest bathrooms that get little use. Pour 2 ounces of enzyme cleaner monthly into kitchen and bath drains. Replace bathroom drain stoppers with smaller-mesh hair catchers; large debris trapped in stoppers is a primary food source.

Have your sewer line inspected if drain fly larva return repeatedly across multiple drains. A cracked or partially clogged sewer line creates breeding conditions that no amount of upstream cleaning can fix.

When to Call a Professional

If two consecutive weeks of enzyme treatment fail to eliminate the infestation, or if flies appear simultaneously across three or more drains, the breeding site is likely beyond your reach. A licensed plumber with a sewer camera scope ($250-$500 service call) can identify hidden cracks, trapped debris in main lines, or deteriorated pipe sections feeding the problem. Pest control companies treating drain fly larva typically charge $150-$400 for a single visit, with follow-up visits if infestations persist.

Outdoor and Septic System Considerations

Septic systems and outdoor drains can produce indoor drain fly populations that look like a plumbing issue. Inspect septic vent stacks, cleanouts, and outdoor drain caps for accumulated debris. A septic system overdue for pumping (typically every 3-5 years) often hosts massive drain fly populations that migrate up through any unsealed connection.

Drain fly larva are unpleasant but not dangerous to humans. They do not bite, sting, or transmit disease. The infestation is mostly a hygiene and aesthetics issue. Catch it early, treat with enzyme cleaner consistently, and they disappear within ten days. Most homes that follow the protocol see zero recurrence for a year or more after the initial treatment cycle.
