Every screw in a sheet of drywall has to land in a zone about a paper’s-thickness deep: dimpled just below the surface without breaking the face paper. Too shallow and the head sticks up under your taping knife; too deep and the screw tears the paper and loses most of its holding power. Push firmly through the whole drive; easing off pressure just before the clutch releases is what causes the half-set screws you find later with the taping knife. And keep the bit square to the board — angled drives cam out, chew the screw head, and tear paper on one side of the dimple.

Bits are consumables. A #2 Phillips drywall bit is done the moment it starts camming out of screw heads, which happens every few hundred screws; buy them in 5-packs ($8 to $12) and change early. The bit holder and depth collar collect gypsum dust — blow them out at the end of each day, because packed dust is the usual reason a gun’s depth setting starts wandering.
