Ask ten homeowners what foam underlayment does and most will say “makes the floor softer.” That’s the least important thing it does. The right foam pad under a floating floor controls sound, smooths minor subfloor imperfections, blocks moisture, and protects the locking joints from grinding against the subfloor. The wrong one — or a doubled-up one — voids warranties and makes click floors flex until the joints fail. I’ve installed miles of this stuff under laminate, LVP, and engineered wood, and here’s what the plastic film between your subfloor and your floor is actually doing, plus how to pick and install it.

What Foam Underlayment Actually Does

Four jobs, in order of real-world importance:

  • Sound damping. Floating floors are drums — hard planks suspended over a hard subfloor. Foam absorbs the impact energy so footsteps don’t echo through the room and the ceiling below. This is the number one reason condos and HOAs mandate underlayment with specific IIC (Impact Insulation Class) ratings, usually IIC 50 or higher for the assembly.
  • Minor leveling. A 2 to 3 mm foam layer bridges small imperfections — sanding ridges, grout lines under a floated floor over old tile. It does not fix dips or humps; anything beyond about 3/16 inch over 10 feet needs patching compound, not thicker foam.
  • Moisture vapor control. Foam with an attached poly film (or closed-cell foam itself) slows vapor migrating up from concrete slabs. Over a slab, a vapor barrier isn’t optional.
  • Joint protection and comfort. The pad cushions the click-lock joints against micro-abrasion and takes a little harshness out of footfall.

The Three Main Foam Types

Standard polyethylene (PE) foam

The white or blue 2 to 3 mm rolls at every big-box store, $0.15 to $0.30 per square foot. Open-structure, lightweight, and honestly the minimum viable product. It cushions and quiets a little, but it compresses and loses thickness over years under traffic. Fine under budget laminate in a bedroom; not what I’d choose for a main level or anything over concrete unless it has a film layer.

Cross-linked polyethylene (IXPE/XPE) foam

Denser, closed-cell foam — this is what’s on the back of most pad-attached LVP. Sold as rolls at $0.30 to $0.60 per square foot. It resists compression far better than standard PE, blocks moisture on its own, and delivers noticeably better acoustic numbers. This is my default recommendation for LVP that needs a separate pad and for mid-range laminate.

Combination/upgraded foam pads

Brands like Floorlot, Roberts First Step, and QuietWalk-style hybrids add features: attached vapor film with taped seam flaps, foam beads for airflow, or higher-density acoustic layers, running $0.40 to $0.80 per square foot. (QuietWalk itself is recycled fiber rather than foam, but it competes in the same slot.) Worth it over concrete and in upstairs rooms where sound matters.

Which Floors Need Foam Underlayment — and Which Must Not Have It

This is where I see the most expensive mistakes, so let’s be blunt:

  1. Laminate: yes, always, unless the planks have a pre-attached pad. Bare laminate over subfloor is loud and the joints wear.
  2. LVP/LVT: depends. Pad-attached LVP gets nothing added underneath except a thin film vapor barrier over concrete if the manufacturer requires one. Unpadded LVP takes a dense, thin pad — 1 to 1.5 mm IXPE — rated for vinyl. Thick soft foam under vinyl lets the joints flex and unlock; most vinyl manufacturers cap pad thickness and specify minimum density, and exceeding it voids the warranty.
  3. Floating engineered hardwood: yes, a 2 to 3 mm pad. Nail-down and glue-down engineered floors use felt paper or adhesive systems instead — no foam.
  4. Solid hardwood (nail-down): no foam, ever. You nail through 15-lb felt or rosin paper. Foam under a nailed floor compresses and squeaks.
  5. Glue-down anything, tile, and carpet: no foam. Carpet uses rebond pad, which is a different product; tile bonds to backer or membrane; glue-down floors bond to the subfloor directly.

And the cardinal rule: never double up. One layer of foam, or one attached pad — not both. Stacked cushioning is the fastest way to broken click joints I know.

Reading the Spec Sheet Like a Pro

Marketing on underlayment packaging is loud; three numbers actually matter. Density (higher is better under vinyl — look for pads specifically rated for LVT). IIC/STC ratings — treat them skeptically because they’re assembly tests, not pad tests, but a pad advertising IIC 60-plus in a tested assembly beats one with no acoustic data. Compression resistance — sometimes listed as compressive strength in psi; higher numbers keep performing under furniture and traffic. Thickness alone tells you almost nothing: a 1.5 mm dense IXPE pad outperforms 3 mm of cheap open PE foam in every metric except marketing.

How to Install Foam Underlayment

This is genuinely a DIY-friendly task. For an average room, budget 30 to 45 minutes.

  1. Prep the subfloor. Sweep and vacuum thoroughly; a screw head or pebble under foam telegraphs forever. Drive any proud fasteners, sand ridges, and patch dips over 3/16 inch with floor patch. Check concrete for moisture — tape a 2×2-foot poly square down for 24 hours; condensation underneath means you need a real 6-mil vapor barrier regardless of pad choice.
  2. Acclimate and plan direction. Roll the underlayment perpendicular to the plank direction where practical, so plank seams and pad seams don’t stack.
  3. Roll the first course. Film side up (when there’s an attached vapor film) and run the film flap up the wall an inch or two if the product provides one; trim after baseboards. Butt the foam to the wall — the flooring, not the foam, gets the expansion gap.
  4. Seam the courses. Butt edges tightly — never overlap foam, which creates a ridge — and seal seams with the built-in adhesive strip or 2-inch seaming tape. Over concrete, taped seams are mandatory for vapor continuity; overlap only the film flap portion if the product is designed that way.
  5. Work in sections. On bigger rooms, lay one or two courses of underlayment, install flooring over them, then roll the next course. Foam under foot traffic all day gets torn and shifted.
  6. Cut around obstacles with a utility knife — tight to door jambs, vents, and pipes. Gaps in the foam are fine acoustically at trivial size but tape any slice in the vapor film over concrete.

Common Mistakes I Get Called to Fix

  • Foam pad added under pad-attached LVP — bouncy floor, unlocked joints within a year.
  • No vapor barrier over a slab — cupped laminate and a moldy pad by the second summer.
  • Overlapped seams — visible ridge lines across the finished floor in raking light.
  • Using foam to “fix” an unflat subfloor — the dip is still there, now with bounce.
  • Cheap PE foam in a second-story hallway — the downstairs ceiling transmits every footstep, and the fix means re-floating the whole floor.

My buying advice is simple: spend proportionally. Under a $1.29-per-foot laminate in a guest room, a $0.20 PE roll is fine. Under $4-per-foot LVP or engineered wood on a main level or over a slab, the $0.50 IXPE or combo pad is the cheapest component of the entire floor and the one you can never swap without tearing everything up. Match the pad to the flooring manufacturer’s spec — density and max thickness for vinyl, vapor barrier over concrete, one layer only — and the floor will sound and feel like it cost more than it did. Skip that homework and the floor itself will remind you daily, one click and creak at a time.
