Contractors used to slap greenboard everywhere a bathroom had moisture, including shower walls, and the results were predictable: ten-year-old showers with rotted walls behind the tile. Greenboard drywall is a moisture-resistant product, not a waterproof one, and the distinction matters enormously. Used in the right places, it is a valuable tool. Used behind a tub surround or in a steam shower, it is a guaranteed callback. Understanding its real capabilities keeps bathrooms dry and walls intact.
What Greenboard Actually Is
Greenboard is standard gypsum drywall with a green paper facing treated with wax and fungicides to resist moisture absorption. The gypsum core is the same as regular drywall. It comes in 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch thicknesses, 4×8 or 4×12 sheets, and costs roughly 20-30% more than standard white drywall. A 4×8 sheet of 1/2 inch greenboard runs $14-18 compared to $11-14 for regular board.
The green paper resists moisture up to the point where liquid water contacts it directly. In a humid bathroom with occasional splashing, the paper holds up well. Submerge it or let water run down its face for months, and the paper still eventually fails. Gypsum underneath never becomes waterproof regardless of the facing.
Where Greenboard Belongs
Modern building codes have narrowed greenboard’s legitimate uses since 2006. Today it is appropriate for the following locations.
- Bathroom ceilings above a shower or tub (without direct water contact)
- Walls around toilets and vanities in a humid bathroom
- Laundry room walls behind washing machines
- Utility room walls where occasional splashes occur
- Basement walls in dry basements with good ventilation
- Kitchens near sinks but not directly behind the backsplash
What greenboard is no longer allowed for is tile backer in wet areas. The 2006 International Residential Code (IRC) and every subsequent edition prohibit greenboard as the substrate for tile in tub surrounds, shower walls, and shower floors. Cement board, fiber cement, or foam-core backers are now required in those locations.
Why Code Banned Greenboard Behind Tile
The paper facing is an organic food source for mold once it gets wet. Tile grout is not waterproof; water migrates through grout lines continuously in showers. For a decade or more, that moisture seeped through to the greenboard behind the tile. The wax coating on the paper delayed failure but did not prevent it. Homeowners discovered the problem when tiles started falling off the wall and a mushroom of black mold appeared behind them.
Cement backer boards like HardieBacker and Durock have no organic content in the core or on the surface. Water that gets past the tile does not feed mold or deteriorate the substrate. A waterproofing membrane like RedGard painted over the cement board adds a second line of defense. This cement-plus-membrane assembly is the current standard in any wet area.
Comparing Greenboard to Purple Board and Cement Board
Understanding the hierarchy of moisture-resistant products helps you pick the right material for each location.
- Regular drywall (white paper): Dry rooms only. No moisture tolerance
- Greenboard: Humid rooms, no direct water. Paper-faced
- Purple board (Gold Bond XP or USG Mold Tough): Fiberglass-faced, mold-resistant; better than greenboard for humid areas
- DensShield: Fiberglass-faced gypsum with a water-resistant surface coating; approved for tile backer in some jurisdictions
- Cement board (HardieBacker, Durock): Non-organic, approved for wet areas, required behind tile in showers

Purple board has largely replaced greenboard in new construction because it resists mold better and costs only a couple dollars more per sheet. If you are framing a new bathroom today, skip greenboard and go directly to purple board for non-tiled walls and cement board behind tile.
Installation Tips for Greenboard
Greenboard installs exactly like regular drywall with a few adjustments. Use corrosion-resistant screws rated for treated material, typically hot-dipped galvanized or ceramic-coated. Standard black drywall screws can rust over time in humid environments and telegraph through the paint.
Hang sheets horizontally on walls with the factory edges meeting on studs. Space screws 12 inches on ceilings and 16 inches on walls. Use setting-type joint compound (Durabond 45 or 90) for the first coat because it dries harder and resists moisture better than premixed mud. Skim coats and finishing can use premixed compound.
Finishing and Painting
Tape and mud greenboard the same way as regular drywall, then prime with a quality stain-blocking primer like Zinsser BIN or Kilz Premium. The green paper can telegraph through thin paint without primer. Finish with a satin or semi-gloss paint labeled for bathrooms and kitchens. Greenboard is stocked at every Home Depot, Lowe’s, and independent lumberyard. A 4×8 sheet of 1/2 inch runs $14-18 and 5/8 inch runs $17-22. Bulk pricing on 25-sheet pallets drops the per-sheet cost by 10-15%. For a typical 5×8 bathroom (roughly 200 sq ft of wall and ceiling), expect 7-8 sheets, or about $130-175 in material.
Compare that to cement board at $15-22 per 3×5 sheet (smaller coverage, so you need more sheets) and purple board at $16-20 per 4×8 sheet. The price delta is small enough that material cost should not drive the choice. Pick based on where the sheet will live and how much moisture it needs to handle.

Greenboard drywall still has a place in residential construction, just not the place it occupied for decades. Use it on bathroom ceilings, utility room walls, and other humid-but-not-wet locations. Never use it behind tile in a shower or tub surround. When in doubt, upgrade to purple board for general moisture areas and cement board for wet areas.
