Tile and stone are coldest, with surface temperatures running 4-8°F below room temp on uninsulated slabs. Pair them with radiant floor heating ($8-$15 per sq ft installed) or limit them to baths and entries where you stand briefly. Hardwood reads warm because of the wood’s lower thermal conductivity. Laminate and LVT sit between, depending on substrate.

Hardness affects standing comfort. Granite and porcelain are unforgiving on the feet, knees, and back during long cooking sessions. A quality kitchen mat at the prep zone makes a meaningful difference. Engineered hardwood and LVT have more give and feel softer over a 30-minute cooking shift.

Best Hard Flooring Options by Room

Match the material to the use case rather than choosing one floor for the whole house. The result looks better and performs better.

Engineered hardwood floating is similar in difficulty. Glue-down LVT and engineered are intermediate, requiring trowel skill and substrate prep.
