When your water heater fires up and raises 50 gallons of water from 60 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, that water expands by roughly half a gallon. In older plumbing systems, that extra volume pushed back into the city main without issue. But modern backflow preventers and check valves create a closed system, trapping that expanded water with nowhere to go. What Does an Expansion Tank Do?
An expansion tank is a small, pressurized vessel, typically 2 to 5 gallons, installed on the cold water supply line feeding your water heater. Inside, a rubber diaphragm or bladder divides the tank into two chambers: one filled with air pre-charged to match your home’s water pressure, and one connected to the plumbing system.
As heated water expands, the excess volume pushes into the tank’s water side, compressing the air bladder. This prevents system pressure from spiking above safe levels. When a hot faucet opens and pressure drops, the compressed air pushes the stored water back into the system. It is a simple, elegant solution that costs under $50 in most cases.
Do You Need One?
If your home has a closed plumbing system, you need an expansion tank. Period. Most municipal water systems now require backflow preventers or pressure-reducing valves at the meter, which create a closed system even if you did not install one intentionally.
Signs that you have a closed system and need an expansion tank include:
- Your temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve drips periodically, especially during heating cycles
- Water pressure fluctuates noticeably when the water heater is running

- 50 to 80 gallon water heater, pressure under 60 PSI: 5-gallon expansion tank

- Tankless water heaters: Generally do not need expansion tanks because they heat water on demand in small volumes, but check local code requirements

How to Install a Hot Water Heater Expansion Tank
Installation is a manageable DIY project for anyone comfortable with basic plumbing. The entire job takes 30 to 60 minutes.
- Check the air charge: Before installation, use a tire pressure gauge on the tank’s Schrader valve (it looks identical to a tire valve). The pre-charge should match your home’s static water pressure. Check your water pressure with a gauge on an outdoor spigot. If they do not match, use a bicycle pump to adjust the tank’s air pressure up or down
- Turn off the water heater and cold water supply valve
- Locate the installation point: The expansion tank mounts on the cold water supply line between the shutoff valve and the water heater. Most installations use a tee fitting above the water heater
- Install a tee fitting: Cut into the cold water line and install a copper or brass tee. The branch outlet points toward where the tank will hang
- Thread the tank on: Wrap the tank’s threaded connection with 4 to 5 wraps of Teflon tape, then thread it into the tee fitting. Tighten with a wrench, being careful not to overtighten and crack the fitting
- Support the tank: Expansion tanks should be supported by a bracket or strap, not hanging by their thread connection alone. Most manufacturers include a mounting bracket. Secure it to a nearby wall stud or joist
- Turn the water back on and check for leaks: Open the cold water valve slowly and inspect every connection. Restore power to the water heater
Maintenance and Replacement
Expansion tanks have a typical lifespan of 5 to 10 years. The rubber bladder inside eventually fails, allowing water to fill the entire tank and eliminating its cushioning effect. Check your tank annually by tapping on it. A properly functioning tank sounds hollow on top (air side) and solid on the bottom (water side). If the entire tank sounds solid or water comes out of the Schrader valve, the bladder has failed and the tank needs replacement.
Also check the air pre-charge pressure annually and adjust if needed. Pressure loss of 2 to 5 PSI per year is normal. A tank that is undercharged waterloggs prematurely, while an overcharged tank does not absorb enough expansion.
What Happens Without an Expansion Tank
Without an expansion tank in a closed system, every heating cycle pushes system pressure above the normal 40 to 80 PSI operating range. Pressures can spike to 150 PSI or higher. The T&P relief valve opens at 150 PSI, dumping hot water onto the floor or into a drain, which wastes energy and eventually wears out the valve. Chronic high pressure stresses pipe joints, supply line connections, toilet fill valves, and the water heater tank itself, shortening the life of everything in your plumbing system.
