Permits and When to Hire a Pro

For an atmospheric gas unit, reconnect the draft hood to the flue with at least a 1/4-inch-per-foot upward slope and proper clearances to combustibles. After firing, hold a match or smoke pencil near the draft hood — the flame should pull inward. If smoke rolls out, you have backdrafting; shut it down and get a pro. A little upkeep dramatically outlasts a neglected tank. Two jobs matter most:

  1. Flush sediment yearly. Drain a few gallons through the bottom valve to clear the mineral sludge that otherwise insulates the burner and pops and rumbles. In hard water, do it twice a year.
  2. Check the anode rod every three to four years. This sacrificial magnesium or aluminum rod corrodes so the steel tank doesn’t. Once it’s eaten down to the core wire, the tank starts rusting. A $30 replacement rod can add years of life.
