When a Hose Works and When It Doesn’t
Siphoning works because of gravity and atmospheric pressure. Water flows from the higher pool surface through the hose to a lower discharge point, with the difference in elevation driving the flow rate. The hose acts as a continuous conduit; air entering anywhere breaks the siphon and stops the flow.
The siphon technique works if:
- The pool’s water surface sits at least 3 feet higher than the discharge point
- The total hose length is under 100 feet (longer runs lose too much flow to friction)
- You have access to a continuous water-tight hose without leaks at connections
- The discharge point is approved for pool water (more on that below)

Mouth-Suction Method (Backup Approach)
