How to Hook Up Dryer Cord: A Safe, 30-Minute DIY Guide

New dryers ship without a power cord because manufacturers do not know whether your home has a 3-prong or 4-prong outlet. That decision was made by the National Electrical Code in 1996, when the NEC switched residential dryer circuits from 3-wire to 4-wire to add a dedicated equipment ground. Knowing how to hook up dryer cord correctly takes about 30 minutes, requires three hand tools, and saves the $60 to $120 a delivery crew typically charges. The job is not difficult, but skipping the ground strap step can create a serious shock hazard, so read all the way through before opening the back panel.

Which Cord Does Your Outlet Need

Look at your wall receptacle before you buy a cord. A 3-prong outlet has two slanted hot prongs and one L-shaped neutral prong, designated NEMA 10-30R. A 4-prong outlet has two hot slots, a neutral, and a round ground hole, designated NEMA 14-30R.

Homes built before 1996 typically still have 3-prong outlets and are grandfathered in. New construction and any updated laundry circuit will be 4-prong. A 6-foot Whirlpool 4-prong cord costs about $25 at Home Depot. A 3-prong cord runs about $20. Buy a 30-amp rated cord with 10-gauge stranded copper.

Tools and Materials You Need

The job requires a 5/16-inch nut driver or socket, a Phillips number 2 screwdriver, a flathead screwdriver, and the new dryer cord. A pair of needle-nose pliers helps for the tight strain-relief clamp. Total tool cost if buying new is about $30.

Confirm the breaker for the dryer is off at the panel before you start. Plug a lamp into the outlet if possible to verify dead. Tape a paper note over the breaker so nobody flips it back on while you work.

Step 1: Remove the Access Panel

Most dryers have a small metal access cover on the back of the cabinet near the bottom, secured by two or four 5/16-inch hex-head screws. Some Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore models hide the terminal block behind a thicker rear panel that needs full removal.

Set the screws aside in a magnetic tray. Pull the panel free to reveal the terminal block, which is a horizontal bar with three or four screws and a green ground screw to the side.

Step 2: Install the Strain Relief

The strain relief is a two-piece bracket that clamps the cord to the cabinet so a yank on the cord cannot pull the wires off the terminal block. Slide the cord through the strain relief from outside the cabinet, leaving about 4 inches of free conductor inside.

Tighten the strain relief just enough that the cord cannot slide. Overtightening will cut through the cord jacket and expose live conductors. The clamp should leave indentations in the rubber jacket but not pinch through to the copper.

Step 3: Connect a 4-Prong Cord

A 4-prong cord has two hot wires (black and red), a white neutral, and a green ground. First, locate the green ground screw on the cabinet wall near the terminal block and remove any factory bonding strap that connects the neutral terminal to the chassis. This is the critical step. Leaving the ground strap in place creates a parallel path that can energize the chassis if the neutral wire develops a fault.

Connect the green ground wire to the green ground screw on the cabinet. Connect the white neutral to the center terminal of the block. Connect the black and red hot wires to the outer left and right terminals. Tighten each screw firmly with the Phillips driver.

Step 4: Connect a 3-Prong Cord

A 3-prong cord has two hot wires (black and red, or sometimes two blacks) and one center wire that serves as both neutral and ground. This is the older NEMA 10-30 standard. Confirm the bonding strap between the center terminal and the cabinet ground is in place. Most dryers ship with this strap installed and you simply leave it.

Connect the center cord wire to the center terminal. Connect the outer two wires to the outer terminals. The center wire carries both neutral current and ground fault current back to the panel, which is why the NEC moved away from this configuration in 1996.

Step 5: Replace the Access Panel and Test

Tug each wire gently to confirm it is fully captured under the terminal screw. Reinstall the access cover with the original screws. Walk the dryer to the outlet without crushing the cord under the cabinet feet.

Plug in, flip the breaker on, and run a 10-minute air-fluff cycle. If the dryer hums but does not heat, you have a hot wire on the neutral terminal. Pull the breaker and recheck your terminal block. Heat comes from 240 volts across both hot legs, while the motor and controls run on 120 volts between one hot and neutral.

3-Prong to 4-Prong Conversion Considerations

If you move a dryer from an older home with a 3-prong outlet to a newer home with a 4-prong outlet, you only need to swap the cord. The dryer itself works on either system. Remove the existing 3-prong cord, install a 4-prong cord, and remove the ground strap as described above.

Never use a 3-prong to 4-prong adapter or rewire the outlet itself without an electrician. Adapters defeat the safety ground and create a fire hazard. A licensed electrician will run a new 10/3 cable from the panel and install a NEMA 14-30R receptacle for about $300 to $500.

When to Call a Professional

If your laundry circuit shares a neutral with another circuit, if the breaker is anything other than a 30-amp double-pole, or if your outlet shows scorch marks, stop and call an electrician.
