Most rookie trim carpenters lose the most hours on inside corners. Walls are never truly 90 degrees, drywall mud builds the corner thicker than the rest of the wall, and any gap larger than 1/16 inch is going to telegraph through paint. Inside corner moulding done right means choosing the correct technique for the profile, cutting at the right angle, and knowing when to cope, when to miter, and when to fake it with caulk. After installing roughly 4 miles of trim across 200 homes, I have a clear playbook for getting tight inside corners every time.
Coping Versus Mitering: Pick the Right Method
Coped joints win on inside corners about 90 percent of the time. You butt one piece of trim square into the corner, then cope the second piece so its profile fits over the face of the first like a puzzle. Even if the wall opens up to 92 degrees, a coped joint stays tight because the coped piece can flex into the open angle.
Miter joints look cleaner on flat profiles like a 1×6 craftsman casing, but they fail the moment the wall is out of square. If you must miter inside corners, only do it on a wall you have verified at 90 degrees with a framing square and only on profiles with no detailed ogee or bead. Mitered crown on a 91 degree corner shows a gap visible from across the room.
The 22.5 Degree Cope Cut
Coping intimidates new carpenters more than it should. The setup is simple. Cut the trim at a 45 degree inside miter as if you were going to install it that way. The miter exposes the profile line you need to follow with the coping saw.
- Mark the profile line darker with a pencil so you can see it under shop lights.
- Hold the coping saw at about 5 degrees back-cut so only the front 1/16 inch of the trim touches the adjacent piece.
- Cut slow and follow the line. A $14 Olson coping saw with 15 TPI blades cuts pine, MDF, and poplar cleanly.
- Test fit. Use a $9 4-in-1 rasp to nibble high spots until the joint closes tight.
Once you have done a dozen, a clean cope takes 4 to 6 minutes per cut, no faster than mitering, and the joint is bulletproof on any wall angle.
Crown Moulding Inside Corners
Crown is the toughest case because the trim sits at a compound angle. You can cope crown by laying it on the miter saw upside down and backward, set at 45 degrees, then coping the resulting profile line. Or you can cheat with the saw flat on its back using the spring angle setting if your saw supports it.
For 38 degree spring angle crown, set the miter at 31.6 degrees and the bevel at 33.9 degrees. For 45 degree spring angle, miter is 35.3 degrees and bevel is 30 degrees. Tape a cheat sheet to your saw because nobody remembers these from memory after a week off.
Base, Shoe, and Quarter Round
Baseboard inside corners are the workhorse trim cut in any house. A standard 5 1/4 inch tall MDF base from Lowes runs about $1.85 per linear foot and copes cleanly with a sharp coping saw. Quarter round and shoe molding always cope. They are thin enough that any miter gap looks like a smile from 4 feet away.
For very tight corners where coping is too fussy, like in a closet, run both pieces of base butted square into the corner and caulk the seam with DAP Alex Plus paintable caulk at $4.50 per tube. Painted base hides this trick well as long as the gap stays under 1/8 inch.
Dealing With Out-of-Square Walls
Older homes routinely have inside corners that measure anywhere from 86 to 94 degrees. Check every corner with a digital angle gauge like the Wixey WR300, about $35, before cutting trim. Record the actual angle on a notepad and adjust cuts accordingly.
For coped joints, you do not need to change the cut. The cope conforms. For miters on flat trim, cut each side at half the measured angle. A 92 degree corner gets two 46 degree cuts. A 88 degree corner gets two 44 degree cuts. Mark the back of each piece with the room and corner so you do not mix them up.
Glue, Nails, and Pin Placement
Glue the cope joint with a tiny dab of Titebond II at the very front edge of the cope only. Too much glue squeezes out and ruins the paintable surface. Pin the trim with 18 gauge brads, 2 inches long for base and 1 1/4 inches for shoe.
Place one brad 1 inch from each end of every piece and another every 16 inches into the studs. Avoid nailing through the cope itself. A pin too close to the cope splits the thin tip and reopens the joint after a heating season. For crown, use 2 1/2 inch 16 gauge finish nails into the top plate at a 45 degree angle.
Caulk and Paint Tricks for Invisible Corners
Even the best cope has a hairline at the joint. Apply paintable acrylic caulk in a thin bead, wipe with a damp fingertip in one smooth motion, and let it dry 1 hour before painting. For light-colored trim, tint the caulk with a drop of the finish paint to avoid a dark line.
Use a stain-blocking primer like Zinsser BIN over any pencil marks or pinhole filler before topcoating. Two coats of trim paint, ideally Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel at about $90 per gallon, hide caulk lines and give the trim that factory-painted look that makes the inside corners disappear.
When to Hire It Out
A whole-house trim package for a 2,000 sq ft home involves around 60 to 80 inside corners. Pros charge $3 to $6 per linear foot for installed base, $5 to $10 per linear foot for crown, and $7 to $14 per linear foot for built-up profiles. If you are doing one room as a project, DIY makes financial sense. If you are trimming a whole new construction, a two-person trim crew can install in two days what would take a homeowner two months.
