Most LVP installs fail in subtle ways traceable to one decision: the wrong underlayment, or skipping it entirely on a plank that was supposed to have a separate pad. LVP flooring underlayment is not optional for floating installs over concrete or wood subfloor, and the right product solves three problems at once — sound transmission, minor subfloor variation, and moisture migration. After spec’ing roughly 24,000 square feet of LVP across residential and small commercial projects since 2021, here is what actually works and what to skip.

Attached Pad vs Separate Underlayment

Most rigid-core SPC and WPC products ship with an attached IXPE (irradiation-crosslinked polyethylene) pad on the back of each plank. The factory pad is 1 to 1.5 mm thick, adds modest sound deadening, and eliminates the need for a separate underlayment in most situations.

An additional separate underlayment is generally not recommended over an attached pad. The two pads stacked create excessive cushion under the rigid core, which leads to lateral movement that breaks the click joints over time. The manufacturer warranty for most major brands explicitly excludes claims when a second underlayment is layered over an attached pad.

When You Need a Separate Underlayment

Three scenarios call for a separate pad. First, when the LVP product ships without an attached pad — typically dryback gluedown products or some flexible LVT. Second, when the subfloor is rough enough that the attached pad alone cannot bridge the variation (anything over 3/16 inch in 10 feet). Third, when sound transmission to the unit below is critical, especially in condos and apartments where the building requires a specific IIC rating.

For these cases, the right underlayment is a manufacturer-approved separate pad — not a random foam roll from the big-box store. Approved underlayments protect the click joints and preserve the warranty.

What the Underlayment Actually Does

A quality LVP underlayment performs four jobs simultaneously. It dampens impact noise to the room below (footfall, dropped objects). It quiets the air-borne sound of foot traffic within the room. It absorbs minor subfloor variation that the rigid core cannot bridge on its own. And it provides a vapor barrier between concrete slabs and the back of the plank.

Cheap foam underlayments at $0.15 per square foot fail all four jobs. They flatten under load within 18 months, lose their R-value, do not block vapor, and provide essentially no acoustic improvement. The savings of $0.30 per square foot cost the floor’s warranty and 4 to 6 years of expected life.

Moisture Barriers Matter on Slabs

Any LVP install over a concrete slab needs a moisture barrier — usually a 6 to 8 mil polyethylene film, often built into the underlayment. Concrete slabs (even cured ones) continually transmit water vapor, and that vapor will accumulate under the LVP and break down the adhesive on attached pads or grow mold over the years.

For below-grade slabs, test the slab moisture before specifying the underlayment. An in-situ probe test (ASTM F2170) at 75 percent RH or below allows a standard underlayment with vapor barrier. Above 75 percent, you need a topical moisture mitigation product like Koster VAP I 2000 ($2.40 to $3.50 per sq ft) before the underlayment goes down.

Pros of Doing Underlayment Right

A properly specified underlayment makes LVP feel like a more expensive floor. The soft underfoot feel, the quieter footfall, and the absence of hollow-sounding spots all contribute to a premium experience. Sound transmission to rooms below drops measurably — IIC ratings of 65 to 75 are achievable with good underlayment, versus 50 to 55 with cheap foam.

The warranty value alone justifies the upcharge. Most LVP warranties require an approved underlayment for any claim involving sound, movement, or joint failure. Where Underlayments Disappoint

Rubber-cork composites work better, but they are heavy and expensive. Installation Tips

  1. Roll the underlayment perpendicular to the planks. This prevents seams from telegraphing through.
  2. Tape the underlayment seams with the manufacturer’s recommended tape. Random duct tape leaves residue that can cause planks to skid.
  3. Trim the vapor barrier flap up the wall by 2 inches before laying the LVP, then trim flush after install.
  4. Do not overlap underlayment edges. Butt them tightly and tape — overlapping creates a high spot that affects plank engagement.

Special Cases: Radiant Heat

Underlayments over radiant heat systems must have a low thermal resistance (R-value under 1.0) to allow heat transfer. QuietWalk LV (R 0.6) and Floor Muffler LVT (R 0.65) work well over radiant heat. Using a laminate pad under LVP voids most warranties and can cause click-joint failure within 2 years.
