Deciding whether you need a moisture barrier for vinyl flooring is one of the most misunderstood parts of a flooring project, and getting it wrong can cost you the whole floor. Here is the short version I give every homeowner who asks: over a concrete slab, you almost always want one, but over a wood subfloor, adding one can actually cause mold and rot. The right answer depends entirely on what sits under your vinyl, and a $40 test can tell you more than any salesperson’s guess.
What a Moisture Barrier Actually Does
A moisture barrier, sometimes called a vapor barrier, is a thin waterproof layer, most often 6-mil polyethylene sheeting, that stops water vapor from migrating up into your flooring. Concrete and soil hold enormous amounts of moisture, and that moisture constantly tries to rise through the slab and evaporate. Without a barrier, vapor reaches the underside of your vinyl, where it can loosen adhesive, warp planks, and feed mold in the seams. The barrier simply blocks that vapor path so the floor stays dry and dimensionally stable.
Modern luxury vinyl is fairly waterproof on the surface, which fools people into thinking the subfloor moisture below does not matter. It does. Trapped vapor with nowhere to escape is still trapped vapor, and it will find the weakest point in your installation.
It helps to picture where the water comes from. Ground moisture pushes upward through concrete by capillary action, and warm indoor air meeting a cooler slab creates condensation on the underside of the flooring. Neither of those is a leak you can see, which is exactly why so many homeowners are blindsided when a floor that never got wet on top starts cupping or smelling musty. The barrier interrupts that invisible cycle before it ever reaches the vinyl.
Over Concrete: Yes, You Almost Always Need One
Concrete is porous and wicks moisture from the ground below like a sponge, even years after the slab has cured. Any slab on or below grade, including basements and ground-floor rooms, should get a moisture barrier before vinyl goes down. You have two main choices here:
- 6-mil poly sheeting: The budget standard. Roll it out, overlap seams by 6 to 8 inches, tape them, and run it a few inches up the walls to be trimmed later.
- Vapor-barrier underlayment: A combination product that adds a small amount of cushion and sound dampening along with the moisture block, often with a built-in overlap film and adhesive strip.
Whichever you choose, seal every seam. A barrier with taped-open joints leaks vapor exactly where you did not want it, and one gap can undo the protection across the whole room.
Over a Wood Subfloor: Usually No, and Here Is Why
Plywood and OSB subfloors are the opposite situation. Wood needs to breathe. It naturally absorbs and releases small amounts of moisture with the seasons, and it dries from both sides. Sandwich a wood subfloor between vinyl on top and a poly vapor barrier on the bottom, and any moisture that gets into that wood, from a spill, a plumbing leak, or humidity, has no way to escape. The result is trapped water against organic material, which is a recipe for mold, mildew, and eventual rot.
For wood subfloors over a ventilated, dry crawl space or a conditioned basement, skip the vapor barrier over the wood. If the crawl space itself is damp, fix that at the source by installing a ground vapor barrier and improving ventilation down below, not by trapping moisture up at the floor.
There is one gray area worth flagging. If your wood subfloor sits directly over a concrete slab, treat the slab as the moisture source and put your barrier under the wood, not between the wood and the vinyl. The rule is always the same: keep the barrier on the concrete side and let the wood dry toward the room. Mix that order up and you create the sandwich that rots subfloors from the inside out, which is one of the most expensive mistakes I get called to fix.
Attached-Pad Vinyl Is Not a Vapor Barrier
Plenty of luxury vinyl planks now ship with a foam or cork pad already bonded to the back, and shoppers assume that pad handles moisture. It does not. An attached pad provides cushioning and sound reduction, but it is not a true vapor barrier and will not stop concrete moisture from reaching your floor. If you install attached-pad vinyl over a slab, you still need a separate 6-mil poly sheet underneath, and you should never stack a second loose underlayment on top of an attached pad because that voids most warranties. Read the product spec sheet; it will state plainly whether a vapor barrier is required.
Test the Concrete Before You Commit
Never guess about slab moisture. Two standard tests give you real numbers:

Always run your test against your specific product’s published limits, since a floor rated for 85% RH is a different animal than one capped at 75%.
Test in a few spots, not just one. Slabs are rarely uniform, and moisture tends to pool near exterior walls, plumbing penetrations, and low corners. I run at least three tests in a typical 200-square-foot room and more in a basement. Let the building sit at normal service temperature and humidity for 48 hours before testing, because a slab tested right after the heat was turned on gives you a number that has nothing to do with how the floor will actually live. Skipping this step to save a day is the fastest way to void a warranty you paid extra for.
Weighing the Honest Pros and Cons
A moisture barrier is not a magic add-on that helps in every situation. On concrete it protects a major investment for the cost of a $30 roll of poly. On wood it can trap moisture and cause the exact damage you were trying to prevent. Consider the real trade-offs:
- Pro: Blocks slab vapor, protects adhesive, prevents warping and mold on concrete.
- Pro: Cheap insurance compared to tearing out a failed floor.
- Con: Over wood, it traps moisture and can breed mold and rot.
- Con: Poorly sealed seams give a false sense of protection.
When Your Warranty Makes the Call for You
Sometimes the decision is out of your hands. Many vinyl manufacturers require a moisture barrier over concrete as a condition of their warranty, and they will deny a claim if you skipped it or failed to hit their RH threshold.
