Oriented strand board has quietly become the dominant subfloor and roof deck material in new construction, outselling plywood roughly four to one in the United States since 2018. Also avoid OSB in crawl spaces with chronic moisture issues, on flat roofs without robust drainage, or as a substrate for hardwood flooring nailed directly down, because nail withdrawal in OSB is lower than in plywood for thin gauge cleats.

For everything else — floor decks, roof sheathing, wall sheathing, sub-stair platforms, and general framing — OSB decking delivers strong performance at meaningful savings. Stick with premium panels when the deck might see weather, and standard commodity OSB when the build is buttoned up fast.
