Walk into any framing supply yard and you will see two or three subfloor products stacked side-by-side: standard CDX plywood, basic OSB, and the premium engineered panels like AdvanTech. Choosing the best wood for subfloor is not a one-size answer — it depends on span, expected moisture exposure, finish floor type, and budget. Get it right and the floor stays flat and quiet for decades. Get it wrong and you live with squeaks, soft spots, or worse, swollen edges that telegraph through hardwood and tile.
What a Subfloor Actually Has to Do
Subfloor sheathing carries the dead load of the floor system, the live load of people and furniture, and the dynamic loads of moving appliances and dropped objects. It also has to span between joists without deflecting more than the L/360 deflection limit set by the IRC. For typical 16-inch on-center joist spacing, a 23/32-inch panel (sold as 3/4-inch) meets that requirement with one of the standard span ratings stamped on the panel: 24 oc or 32/16.
The subfloor also has to provide a smooth, screw-friendly nailing surface for finished floors and resist construction moisture from rain delays, plumbing leaks, and humidity swings. Panels can sit exposed for weeks during framing before the roof is dry-in, and this is where the lower-grade products fall apart.
Standard CDX Plywood
CDX (C-D Exposure 1) plywood is the original subfloor material and still meets code in every U.S. jurisdiction. A 4×8 sheet of 23/32 CDX runs about $45 to $65 at Home Depot or Lowe’s as of mid-2026. Plywood has a major advantage in moisture cycling — it absorbs water more evenly across layers and dries faster than OSB, so short rain exposures rarely cause permanent edge swelling.
The downside is variability. A given lift of CDX can include sheets with surface voids, knots, or warped panels. Sanded plywood like BC or AC grades are flatter and smoother but cost 50 to 80 percent more than CDX without performance gains as a subfloor.
Standard OSB
Standard OSB (oriented strand board) for subfloor use is sold under brand names like LP TopNotch or Norbord Pinnacle. A 4×8 sheet of 23/32 OSB runs $30 to $45, typically 15 to 25 percent cheaper than CDX. OSB has consistent stiffness, no internal voids, and a smoother face than commodity plywood.
Where OSB struggles is moisture. Standard OSB absorbs water through the cut edges and swells permanently if it stays wet for more than a few days. That edge swell often appears as ridges along the panel seams even after the panel dries, and those ridges can telegraph through vinyl plank and laminate floors. Many production builders use OSB anyway because of the cost savings, but it requires careful weather management.
Premium Engineered Subfloor
This is where Huber AdvanTech, LP Legacy, Weyerhaeuser Edge Gold, and Georgia-Pacific DryPly compete. These products use enhanced resins and densified strands or engineered plywood layups to deliver three things: better stiffness, much better moisture resistance, and a flatter, denser face that holds fasteners tighter.
AdvanTech panels carry a 500-day no-sand warranty against weather exposure. A 4×8 sheet of 23/32 AdvanTech runs $55 to $75, putting it between standard plywood and the cheapest OSB. Many high-end builders specify AdvanTech for the entire floor because the cost premium ($150 to $300 over OSB for a typical 2,400 sq ft home) buys silent floors with no edge swell.

Matching Subfloor to Finish Floor
Hardwood and engineered wood need a stiff, flat substrate. The NWFA requires no more than 3/16 inch deflection between joists over 16-inch spans. For solid 3/4-inch hardwood, that means 3/4-inch subfloor minimum and 23/32 AdvanTech or two layers of plywood (15/32 plus 15/32) is the gold standard.
Tile flooring demands the most rigid substrate of all. TCNA guidelines require L/360 for ceramic and L/720 for natural stone. Most tile installations add a 1/4-inch cement backer board (HardieBacker or Durock) screwed into the subfloor every 6 inches at edges and 8 inches in the field, increasing total floor thickness to nearly 1 inch.
Luxury vinyl plank is the most forgiving — virtually any subfloor works, but flatness still matters. LVP manufacturers like Shaw, COREtec, and LifeProof require subfloor flatness within 3/16 inch over 10 feet, which standard OSB after weather exposure may not meet.
Installation Details That Matter Most
Glue and screw is the standard for any quality floor. Run a 3/8-inch bead of subfloor adhesive like Liquid Nails Subfloor LN-602 or PL Premium along every joist before laying each panel. Fasten with 2-1/2 inch deck screws or ring-shank nails every 6 inches at panel edges and 12 inches in the field. The combination of construction adhesive and mechanical fasteners eliminates the squeaks that nailed-only floors develop over time.
Stagger panel seams across joists — no four-way intersections. Leave 1/8-inch gap between panels (AdvanTech and most engineered panels include built-in spacers) to allow seasonal movement.
Span Ratings and Joist Spacing
The two numbers stamped on every subfloor panel matter. The first is the maximum roof span (irrelevant for floor use); the second is the maximum floor joist spacing. A 24/16 panel handles 16-inch on-center floor joists. A 32/16 panel handles 16-inch joists with higher deflection performance. A 48/24 panel handles 24-inch joists.
For 24-inch on-center joist spacing common in some modern builds, you want either a 1-1/8 inch single-layer panel or two layers totaling 1-1/4 inch thickness. The premium engineered options like AdvanTech 1-1/8 are sold specifically for this application.
The Practical Pick
For a remodel where you can control weather exposure, 23/32 CDX plywood is the best value. For new construction or any situation where panels might sit exposed for weeks, AdvanTech is worth the upcharge. Avoid commodity OSB in any project where the finish floor is hardwood, engineered wood, or tile — the long-term performance penalty outweighs the small cost savings.
The best wood for subfloor varies by situation, but the principle is the same: spend the money once, fasten it correctly with adhesive and screws, and the finish floor above it will lie flat and silent for the life of the house.
