The First Decision: Full-Frame vs. Insert Replacement

Full-frame replacement removes everything — old door, frame, interior and exterior trim — down to the rough opening’s bare studs. You (or your installer) inspect and repair the framing, install a sill pan, flash the opening like new construction, and set a complete new unit.

Insert (retrofit) replacement leaves the existing frame in place and slides a new, slightly smaller unit inside it. Faster, cheaper, less disruption to siding and stucco — and completely dependent on the old frame being sound, square, and dry.

  6. Set, shim, and square the unit. Dry-fit, then set the frame in a bead of sealant on the pan’s front edge (never sealing the pan’s drainage path at the back). Shim at each hinge or lock point and at quarter points on wide units, checking level, plumb, and — the one DIYers miss — cross-leg: both jambs in the same vertical plane. Measure diagonals; equal diagonals within 1/8 inch means square. Fasten through shims only, so the frame doesn’t bow.
  7. Test operation before finishing anything. Panels should glide or swing with fingertip effort, lock alignment should be dead-on, and reveal gaps even all around. Adjust now — foam makes adjustments permanent.
  8. Insulate and seal. Low-expansion window-and-door foam in the gap (regular foam bows jambs and jams doors), backer rod and sealant at the exterior perimeter, head flashing or drip cap over the top trim.
  9. Trim, threshold transition, and hardware. Interior casing, a clean waterproof transition to the interior floor, exterior trim or siding patch, locks and screens. New weather stripping should seal evenly — a dollar bill dragged through any closed edge should pull out with friction.
