Pellet Stove in Garage: How to Install One Safely and Legally

Heating a workshop or hobby garage with a pellet stove in garage spaces is appealing — pellets cost less per BTU than propane in most regions, the heat is dry and consistent, and pellet stoves run cleaner than wood burners. The catch is that garages have unique code requirements most installers ignore until an inspector shuts the job down or, worse, until carbon monoxide poisoning sends someone to the hospital. Doing this right requires understanding the IRC and IMC code provisions for garages and matching the stove to those rules.

What the Building Code Actually Says

The 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) addresses appliances in attached garages in Section M1307.3. Key requirements:

  • Appliances generating a flame or spark must be elevated at least 18 inches above the garage floor, OR be listed as flammable-vapor-ignition-resistant (FVIR)
  • Equipment must be protected from vehicle impact (bollards, curbs, or location)
  • Garages must have a fresh air intake to provide combustion air
  • Carbon monoxide alarms are required in adjacent occupied spaces
  • All venting must terminate per manufacturer specs and code minimums from doors, windows, and air intakes

Detached garages have somewhat looser rules but still require proper venting, combustion air, and clearance to combustibles. Always pull a permit. Insurance claims for fire or CO incidents involving unpermitted installations are routinely denied.

The 18-Inch Elevation Rule and Why It Exists

The 18-inch elevation requirement comes from research showing that gasoline vapor — which is heavier than air — accumulates near the floor of garages where vehicles, lawn mowers, and fuel cans are stored. A flame source within 18 inches of the floor can ignite those vapors, causing flash fires.

Mount your pellet stove on a code-approved hearth pad that sits on a platform raising the firebox at least 18 inches above the slab. Alternatively, look for a wall-mount pellet stove model that hangs above the danger zone. Harman P43 and Quadra-Fire Mt. Vernon both have approved elevated installation configurations.

Note that the 18-inch rule does not apply if the stove is specifically listed as FVIR. Almost no pellet stoves currently carry that listing because the certification process is expensive and most manufacturers prioritize residential installation, not garages.

Choosing the Right Pellet Stove Size

Garages are notoriously poorly insulated. A typical 2-car garage at 22 by 22 feet (484 sq ft) with R-13 walls and an uninsulated overhead door loses roughly 35,000 to 50,000 BTU per hour in 20°F outdoor temperatures. Pellet stoves are rated in BTU output:

Typical vent path from a garage installation runs horizontal through the exterior wall, then vertical up the outside of the building. Critical clearances:

  • Minimum 12 inches above any door or window within 4 feet horizontally
  • Minimum 36 inches from any forced air intake
  • Minimum 84 inches above any walking surface (for horizontal terminations)
  • Minimum 24 inches above the roof for vertical terminations

Vent kits from DuraVent or Selkirk run $250 to $600 depending on length and configuration. Skip generic chimney pipe — pellet stoves require pellet-rated venting, period.

Combustion Air Supply

Pellet stoves consume air at 25 to 50 cubic feet per minute (CFM) during operation. A tightly sealed garage will quickly create negative pressure that pulls combustion exhaust back into the space, causing CO buildup. Two solutions handle this.

The cleaner option is a dedicated outside air kit (OAK) that connects directly to the stove’s combustion air intake. Most modern pellet stoves have a 2 to 3 inch port specifically for this purpose. A 6-foot OAK kit runs $80 to $150 and dramatically improves combustion efficiency.

The alternative is a fresh air vent — a 6-inch passive vent installed on an exterior wall to allow makeup air into the garage. Less efficient than a direct connection but works fine for older stoves without an OAK port.

Pellet Storage in a Garage

One of the practical advantages of running a pellet stove in garage spaces is that you can store bulk pellet supply right where you need it. A ton of pellets — fifty 40-pound bags — provides roughly 1.5 to 2 months of heating for a typical garage installation.

Store pellets on pallets at least 2 inches off the concrete floor to prevent moisture wicking. Wet pellets swell, jam augers, and produce poor combustion. Pellet stoves need 120V power for the auger motor, combustion fan, and convection blower. Typical consumption is 100 to 400 watts depending on operation phase — ignition draws much more than steady-state operation. Plug into a dedicated 15-amp circuit if possible.

Critical consideration: if power fails, a pellet stove stops feeding fuel but the remaining pellets in the burn pot continue burning until they exhaust. Without the combustion blower, exhaust can spill into the room. A battery backup UPS rated for 600 watts and 30 minutes of runtime ($150 to $250) is highly recommended.

When This Project Does Not Make Sense

If your garage is rarely heated, a portable propane heater or radiant tube heater costs less to install and uses fuel only when needed. Pellet stoves make sense for garages used as workshops or hobby spaces 4 or more days per week during cold months. For occasional weekend use, the upfront cost cannot be justified by fuel savings. Match the heating solution to actual usage patterns rather than installing the most elegant option for limited use.
