Pipe Cap: Complete Guide for Homeowners

Every rough-in plumber carries a pocket full of them, yet most homeowners never think about them until a line needs to be sealed off mid-project. A pipe cap is the small fitting that terminates a pipe run, blocks off an unused stub-out, or temporarily closes a line while you work downstream. Choose the wrong material or pressure rating and you get a leak; choose correctly and the cap outlasts the pipe it protects.

What a Pipe Cap Does

Pipe caps serve three common purposes in residential plumbing. They permanently seal a dead leg — an unused branch that was installed for a future bathroom or fixture. They temporarily close a supply line so you can pressure-test a section. And they cap rough-in stubs in new construction before drywall goes up, keeping debris and drywall mud out of the plumbing.

Unlike a plug, which threads into the inside of a fitting, a cap fits over the outside of a pipe. That distinction matters when you are shopping — asking for a cap when you need a plug ends with two trips to the hardware store.

Pipe Cap Materials and Where They Fit

The material of your cap must match the pipe. Mixing materials without the right transition fitting invites galvanic corrosion or glue failure.

How to Install a PVC Cap

Solvent-welding a PVC cap is straightforward if you follow the prep steps. Cut the pipe square with a PVC cutter, chamfer the outside edge with a deburring tool, and wipe both the pipe and the cap socket clean. Apply purple primer to both surfaces, then a generous coat of PVC cement. Push the cap onto the pipe with a quarter-turn twist and hold for 30 seconds to prevent push-back. Let it cure for 15 minutes before pressure test, 2 hours before returning it to service.

How to Sweat a Copper Cap

Sweating a copper cap is a basic plumbing skill worth practicing on scrap before you tackle a live line. Clean the pipe end with emery cloth until bright, clean the cap socket with a fitting brush, and apply lead-free flux to both. Assemble, then heat the cap — not the pipe — with a propane torch until the flux sizzles. Touch solder to the joint and let capillary action pull it in. You need about 1/2 inch of solder for a 1/2 inch cap.

Wipe the joint with a damp rag while still warm and let it cool naturally. Never quench copper with water from a spray bottle. Rapid cooling causes micro-cracks that leak weeks later.

PEX and Push-to-Connect Caps

PEX changed how quickly you can cap a line. A SharkBite push cap goes onto a clean, marked pipe in about 10 seconds — no torch, no cement, no crimp tool. They are rated to 200 psi and 200°F, and are code-legal behind walls in most US jurisdictions when installed per manufacturer instructions.

For permanent PEX installations, crimp or clamp caps cost less than a quarter of the push version and do not have the same long-term uncertainty around O-ring life. A crimp cap with a brass insert and copper ring runs about $1.50 at plumbing supply houses.

Gas Line Caps

Gas line caps must be yellow-coded black iron or CSST-approved. Never use a water line cap on gas. Tapered NPT threads require two to three wraps of yellow gas-rated PTFE tape or a dab of pipe dope rated for hydrocarbons. Tighten to roughly 40 ft-lb for a 1/2 inch cap — hand-tight plus one to two wrench turns for most sizes.

After installation, spray the cap with a 50/50 water and dish soap mix and watch for bubbles with the gas on. Any bubble means a leak, and the cap needs to come off and go back on with fresh sealant.

Pressure Ratings and Code

Caps carry the same pressure rating as the pipe they terminate, provided you use matched materials. A Schedule 40 PVC pipe is rated to 220 psi at 73°F, but the same pipe drops to 88 psi at 140°F. DWV caps are not rated for any positive pressure and should never be used on supply lines, even temporarily. Check your local code on capped dead legs — some jurisdictions require stagnant lines to be drained and marked, since bacteria can grow in dead water.
