Every threaded pipe connection in your home — from the water heater to the gas range to the garden hose bib — relies on pipe joint compound or thread sealant tape to prevent leaks. Threaded fittings are not watertight on their own. The threads create a mechanical connection, but microscopic gaps between the male and female threads allow fluid to seep through unless sealed. Choosing the right compound for the application and applying it correctly is the difference between a leak-free joint and a slow drip that damages walls, floors, and ceilings.
Types of Pipe Joint Compound
- Teflon paste (PTFE-based): The most common all-purpose pipe joint compound. White or gray paste that works on water, gas, and compressed air connections. Brands: Rectorseal T Plus 2, Oatey Great White. $5-$10 per container
- Pipe dope (oil-based): Traditional pipe thread sealant used for decades. Works well but dries hard and makes future disassembly difficult. Being replaced by Teflon paste in most applications
- Teflon tape (PTFE tape): Thin tape wrapped around male threads. Clean, easy to apply, and suitable for most water connections. Standard white tape for water, yellow tape (thicker) for gas. $1-$3 per roll
- Anaerobic thread sealant: Liquid that cures in the absence of air between metal threads. Creates a permanent, pressure-rated seal. Loctite 545 and 567 are common. $10-$15 per tube
- Specialty compounds: Formulated for specific applications — oxygen service (non-combustible), stainless steel (prevents galling), potable water (NSF-certified). $8-$20 per container
Paste vs. Tape: When to Use Each
Pipe joint compound paste fills gaps and irregularities better than tape on larger pipe sizes (3/4 inch and above). Paste also works better on fittings that are slightly worn or cross-threaded because it fills voids that tape alone cannot bridge. For gas lines, many codes specifically require paste or yellow gas-rated tape rather than standard white Teflon tape.
Tape works well on clean, undamaged threads in smaller sizes (1/2 inch and below). It is cleaner to apply and does not squeeze out of the joint like paste can. Many plumbers use both — a few wraps of tape on the threads topped with a thin layer of paste for the most reliable seal. This belt-and-suspenders approach adds seconds to the assembly and virtually eliminates the chance of leaks.
How to Apply Pipe Joint Compound
- Clean both male and female threads with a wire brush or clean rag. Remove old compound, dirt, and debris
- Apply compound to the male threads only — never the female threads. Compound on female threads gets pushed into the pipe when assembled and can contaminate the system
- Apply a thin, even coat covering all threads. Use your finger or the applicator brush included with most containers
- Leave the first 1-2 threads nearest the pipe end bare. Compound on the leading threads gets pushed into the pipe during assembly
- Hand-tighten the fitting, then tighten with a wrench. For most residential fittings, 1.5-2 turns past hand-tight is sufficient. Over-tightening cracks fittings
- Wipe away excess compound that squeezes out of the joint with a rag
For Teflon Tape Application
Wrap tape clockwise around the male threads when viewed from the threaded end. Clockwise wrapping tightens the tape as you screw the fitting together. Counter-clockwise wrapping causes the tape to unravel during assembly, bunching up and potentially causing leaks.
Standard white Teflon tape requires 3-5 wraps for water connections. Yellow gas-rated tape (thicker and denser) needs 4-6 wraps. Pull the tape taut as you wrap to stretch it into the thread grooves. Overlap each wrap by half the tape width. Tear the tape cleanly at the end and press it flat against the threads so it does not flap loose during assembly.
Gas Line Requirements
Gas connections demand specific sealants rated for natural gas and propane. Standard white Teflon tape is not approved for gas lines in most jurisdictions — use yellow gas-rated Teflon tape or a pipe joint compound specifically labeled for gas service. Rectorseal No.5 ($6-$10) and Gasoila Soft-Set ($8-$12) are both widely approved for natural gas and LP gas connections.
After assembling gas fittings, always perform a leak test. Apply a 50/50 mix of dish soap and water to every joint with a brush. Turn on the gas supply and watch for bubbles. Even tiny bubbles indicate a leak that must be corrected before the connection is put into service. Tighten the fitting an additional quarter-turn and retest. If the leak persists, disassemble, clean the threads, and reassemble with fresh compound.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Applying pipe joint compound to compression fittings, flare fittings, or push-to-connect fittings is unnecessary and can actually cause leaks. These fitting types seal through mechanical compression — the added compound interferes with the metal-to-metal contact that creates the seal. Only use compound or tape on tapered (NPT) threaded fittings.
Using too much compound creates problems. Excess paste squeezed into water lines can clog aerators, shower heads, and valve seats. Excess tape pieces can break off and travel through the system. Apply just enough to fill the thread gaps — a thin, even coat is all that is needed. More compound does not mean a better seal.
