Walk into a hardware store and ask for plumbers caulk, and you’ll get pointed at three different shelves — because the term isn’t a single product, it’s a job description. What people mean by plumbers caulk is any sealant rated to live around fixtures: sink rims, tub surrounds, faucet bases, toilet perimeters, the places where water sits, splashes, and steams every single day. Nine times out of ten the right answer is a 100 percent kitchen-and-bath silicone, but the exceptions matter, and the most expensive mistake in the category — confusing caulk with plumber’s putty — has ruined more granite countertops and cracked more plastic drain baskets than any other blunder in residential plumbing. What “Plumbers Caulk” Actually Means

What earns a sealant the “plumbers” designation is a short list of traits: it stays waterproof under daily soaking, it carries a mildewcide so it doesn’t grow black spots in a steamy bathroom, it flexes as fixtures shift and porcelain expands, and it grips slick non-porous surfaces — glazed ceramic, porcelain, fiberglass, stainless steel — that ordinary painter’s caulk releases from within a season.
The 100 percent silicone products dominate for a reason. They cure into a permanent rubber gasket, shrug off water from the day they cure, and routinely last 10 to 20 years in a shower. The siliconized tub-and-tile acrylics are easier to tool and clean up with water, but they’re a 5-to-7-year product in a truly wet joint, and in a heavily used shower they can start staining sooner than that.
