How a Prier Frost-Free Hydrant Works

Understanding the anatomy makes the repair obvious. A frost-free sillcock is essentially a faucet on a long tube. Step-by-Step: Rebuilding a Dripping Prier Sillcock

  1. Shut off the supply. Find the interior shutoff feeding the hydrant — usually a ball valve on the line in the basement or crawlspace — and close it. Open the outdoor handle fully to drain.
  2. Remove the handle screw and handle. A Phillips screw holds the wheel; corroded ones respond to penetrating oil and a firm push while turning.
  3. Unthread the bonnet nut. Hold the hydrant body steady with one wrench and back the packing nut or bonnet off counterclockwise with another. Support the body so you do not twist the solder joint inside the wall.
  4. Withdraw the stem. Thread the handle back on temporarily and pull while turning counterclockwise — the stem unscrews from the seat, then slides straight out. Expect a foot or more of rod.
  5. Replace the seat washer. At the far tip, remove the brass screw, swap the old flattened washer for the new one from the kit, and snug the screw firmly.
  6. Replace stem seals. Roll the old O-rings off the stem collar, grease the new ones with silicone plumber’s grease, and install. On packing-style models, wind the new graphite packing clockwise under the packing nut.
  7. Reassemble. Feed the stem back through, thread it into the seat gently until it stops, tighten the bonnet snug, and remount the handle.
  8. Test. Restore water, run the hydrant 30 seconds, then shut off and watch the spout for a full minute. A properly seated washer stops the drip completely, not mostly.

Anti-siphon models (C-144, P-164 series) have a plastic cap on top of the head. If water burps or sprays from under this cap whenever you close a nozzle on the hose, the vacuum breaker poppet is worn or fouled — a code-required part that prevents contaminated hose water from siphoning into your drinking supply, so do not just tape over it. Unscrew the cap (some are tamper-resistant; Prier’s kit includes the release trick, which is typically pressing two side tabs), lift out the poppet assembly, and drop in the new one from the vacuum breaker kit. When Repair Is the Wrong Call

A rebuild kit fixes seals; it cannot fix a split tube. If the hydrant froze with a hose attached last winter, water trapped in the barrel likely burst the tube inside the wall, and the telltale is water inside the basement ceiling or wall the first time you use the spigot in spring — often with normal-looking flow at the spout. That demands full replacement, about $30 to $60 for a new Prier P-164 plus plumber time, or a half-day DIY job if the connection is accessible. Likewise, a wobbly stem that will not tighten usually means stripped seat threads in the body. Rule of thumb: leaks that appear at the handle or spout are kit-fixable; water appearing anywhere inside the house is not.

Winterizing So You Never Buy Another Kit

Seat washers on frost-free hydrants mostly die from two habits. The first is leaving hoses, splitters, or timers attached in winter — the barrel cannot drain, ice forms, and even if the tube survives, the expanding ice hammers the washer and seat. Disconnect everything by Thanksgiving in freezing climates. The second is overtightening: cranking the handle down hard mashes the washer into the seat and cuts its life in half. Close it to firm, not to fight. Add a $3 insulated faucet cover in hard-freeze zones for cheap insurance.
