Drainage Is What Keeps the Wall Standing

Water pressure behind a retaining wall doubles the horizontal load it has to resist. Every wall taller than 2 feet needs three drainage elements:

Timber and stone walls require deliberate setback — stack each course 1 to 2 inches back from the one below it. A plumb wall has no safety margin; a battered wall resists overturning force as soil pressure increases over time.

Cap and Finish Details

Cap blocks, flagstone coping, or a bluestone slab finish the top of the wall and cover the rear cavity where water would otherwise enter. Adhere caps with a polyurethane construction adhesive like Loctite PL Premium. A capped wall sheds water forward rather than soaking into the core.
