Screwdriver Types and Uses: The Complete Reference

Grab the wrong driver and you’ll round off a screw head in seconds, turning a five-minute job into a drilling-and-extracting nightmare. Understanding screwdriver types and uses is the difference between clean, confident repairs and a drawer full of stripped fasteners. There are far more than the two everybody knows, and each tip profile exists to solve a specific problem, whether it’s transferring more torque, resisting cam-out, or keeping tamperers out of an appliance.

Flathead (Slotted) Screwdrivers

The oldest design, the flathead, fits the single straight slot found on slotted screws. You’ll still see these on light switch plates, older furniture, and many electrical terminals. Sizes are measured by blade width, commonly ranging from 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch, and the blade must match the slot width closely or it will slip and gouge the surface.

Flatheads are handy beyond screws, doubling as pry bars, paint-can openers, and scrapers, though purists will tell you to keep a dedicated tool for that. Their main weakness is cam-out: because nothing locks the tip in the slot, the driver slides out easily under torque.

Phillips Screwdrivers

The cross-shaped Phillips is the workhorse of American hardware. Its self-centering tip seats quickly, which made it ideal for assembly lines. Phillips drivers come in sizes from PH0 (small electronics) up through PH1, PH2, and PH3, with PH2 covering the vast majority of household screws.

The design intentionally cams out under high torque to prevent overtightening, which is helpful on a factory line but frustrating when you’re driving a stubborn screw by hand. Match the number size to the screw to minimize slipping, and replace any driver with a worn, rounded tip.

Robertson (Square) Screwdrivers

Popular in Canada and increasingly in the US, the Robertson uses a square-shaped recess. The deep square socket grips so well that screws often stay stuck on the tip, letting you start them one-handed. Robertson drivers come color-coded by size: yellow (#0), green (#1), red (#2), and black (#3).

Woodworkers and deck builders love square drives because they resist cam-out far better than Phillips and let you apply serious torque without stripping. Many pocket-hole and cabinet screws use this profile.

Torx (Star) Screwdrivers

The six-pointed star recess, branded Torx, is everywhere in modern electronics, automotive work, and appliances. Its design transfers high torque with almost no cam-out, which extends both bit and screw life. Sizes are labeled with a T followed by a number, from T1 in tiny electronics up to T40 and beyond in automotive applications. T15, T20, and T25 cover most consumer gadgets and hardware.

  • T6–T10: Laptops, phones, game controllers.
  • T15–T25: Appliances, lawn equipment, furniture hardware.
  • T27–T40: Automotive brakes, larger machinery.

Hex (Allen) Drivers

The hexagonal recess, often called an Allen, is standard on flat-pack furniture, bicycles, and machine bolts. While many people use the familiar L-shaped Allen wrench, hex screwdriver bits and drivers offer better control for repetitive assembly. Sizes are measured in millimeters (1.5mm to 10mm) and SAE fractions (1/16 inch to 3/8 inch).

Keep both metric and imperial hex sets on hand, because mixing standards leads to stripped sockets. A 4mm and a 5/32-inch look nearly identical but are not interchangeable.

Specialty and Security Screwdrivers

Beyond the everyday profiles sit a handful of specialty drivers designed to deter tampering or fit unusual fasteners. You’ll meet these eventually when you open a game console, replace a faucet cartridge, or service an appliance:

  • Match the size exactly: A PH1 in a PH2 screw will round the head fast.
  • Push and turn: Apply firm downward pressure so the tip stays seated.
  • Keep tips fresh: Replace worn, rounded bits that no longer grip.
