The drain assembly under a sink looks simple from the outside, but it has to do four jobs at once: carry waste water out, block sewer gas with a water seal, equalize air pressure so the seal cannot get sucked out, and let you reach in to clear hair and food without tearing apart the wall. Sink drain plumbing that fails any one of those jobs gives you slow drains, sewer-gas smell in the house, or gurgling that sounds like the kitchen is about to explode. Standard kitchen sink drain pipe is 1.5 inches in diameter; bathroom sinks use 1.25 inches. Modern installations almost always use white PVC or schedule 40 ABS, both of which assemble with solvent cement or compression slip nuts.
The P-Trap Is the Most Important Part
The P-trap holds about a cup of water in its U-bend at all times. That water blocks sewer gas, methane, and bacteria from rising back up the drain into your kitchen or bathroom. Without it, every sink in your house would smell like a portable toilet within a day. The shape also catches dropped jewelry, retainers, and small parts before they vanish into the wall.
P-traps come apart with hand-tightened slip nuts. Place a bucket under the trap, unscrew both nuts, lower the U-bend, dump the water and any clog material, rinse, and reinstall. The whole process takes 5 minutes once you have done it twice.
Why You Need a Vent
Every fixture drain needs air behind the water flow, the same way pouring liquid from a sealed gallon jug glugs and sputters compared to one with a vent hole punched in the back. Without venting, the column of water rushing down the drain pulls a vacuum that sucks the water out of the P-trap. The trap empties, the seal breaks, and sewer gas enters the room.
Most US codes require a vent within 5 feet (1.5-inch drain) or 6 feet (2-inch drain) of every fixture trap. The vent typically rises through the wall, joins other vents in the attic, and exits through the roof. Older homes or kitchen islands sometimes use air admittance valves (AAVs) like the Studor Mini-Vent, which open under negative pressure to admit air without venting through the roof.
Slope: One Quarter Inch Per Foot
Horizontal drain pipe between the trap and the wall must slope down toward the wall at exactly 1/4 inch per foot. That slope is fast enough to carry solids without water draining out from under them, and slow enough that liquids do not race ahead and leave waste behind. Steeper slopes actually clog more often than correct slopes.
If your trap arm runs flat or backward, water pools and food or hair settles at the low point. This is the single most common DIY plumbing mistake and the reason a freshly installed sink drains slowly.
Common Materials and How They Connect
White PVC schedule 40 dominates new construction. Joints get cleaner, primer, and PVC cement, and the bond is permanent within 30 seconds. ABS (black plastic) was common in the 1970s through 1990s and is still allowed in some jurisdictions; it uses ABS-specific cement.
Visible drain pipes under the sink are usually slip-joint assemblies that go together with hand-tightened nuts and beveled washers. These slip joints make repairs and disassembly possible without solvent. Use Teflon tape or pipe-joint compound on the threads only when you find a metal-to-metal fitting; plastic slip nuts seal on the bevel and need no tape.
Garbage Disposals Change the Drain Geometry
Adding a garbage disposal to a kitchen sink changes the drain configuration significantly. The disposal mounts in place of the basket strainer and replaces the tailpiece with the disposal’s own discharge tube. The trap then connects to the disposal output rather than a tailpiece below the basket.
If a dishwasher drains through the disposal, the dishwasher hose connects to the side inlet on the disposal, and a high loop or air gap is required between the dishwasher and the disposal to prevent backflow. Most US codes now require an air gap fitting on the countertop, while older code allowed a high loop under the counter as an alternative.
The Double-Bowl Sink Configuration
A double-bowl sink uses a center-outlet tee or end-outlet tee to combine both basin drains into one trap. The center-outlet design is more compact and fits under shallow sinks; the end-outlet style is easier to assemble around a disposal that takes up most of one bowl’s vertical clearance.
Both bowls must drain to the trap above the trap weir (the highest point of the water seal). If one drain ties into the trap below the weir, you create a continuous siphon that pulls the seal out every time water flows.
Common Problems and Quick Fixes
Slow drain: usually hair and soap scum in the trap or trap arm. Disassemble and clean the trap, then snake the arm with a 25-foot drum auger.
Gurgling noise when draining: the vent is partially blocked or the trap arm is too long. Check the rooftop vent for ice, leaves, or bird nests; correct any flat sections in the trap arm.
Sewer smell: the trap dried out (common in seldom-used guest bathrooms), the trap is leaking through a loose slip nut, or the wax ring on a nearby toilet has failed. Pour a quart of water into any unused drain monthly to keep the seal full.
Leaks at the slip nuts: the beveled washer is missing, installed backwards, or compressed. Disassemble, replace the washer, and hand-tighten only. Wrenches crack plastic nuts.
Code Considerations You Should Know
Several details that look optional are actually code requirements in most US jurisdictions.
- S-traps are illegal because they self-siphon and break the water seal
- Drum traps are obsolete and cannot be reinstalled in new work
- The vertical distance from trap weir to vent connection cannot exceed certain limits (usually 5 feet for 1.5-inch pipe)
- Cleanouts are required at the base of every vertical drain stack and at any 90-degree change of direction in horizontal lines
When to Call a Plumber
Replacing a P-trap or clearing a clog with a hand snake is firmly in DIY territory. Cutting into the wall to modify drain or vent piping, replacing a vent stack, or working on the connection between the fixture branch and the main drain line gets into permit-required work. If a drain backs up across multiple fixtures simultaneously (sink and toilet both flooding), the problem is in the main line and requires a plumber with a power auger or drain camera.
