Soundproof Flooring: Best Materials to Reduce Noise

Soundproof flooring addresses these problems by absorbing and blocking sound transmission between levels, and the difference between a good choice and a bad one is measurable: up to 30 decibels of noise reduction depending on the flooring material and underlayment combination. If noise is disrupting your home, the floor is one of the most effective and accessible places to fix it.

Understanding STC and IIC Ratings

Two metrics define how well a floor system controls sound. STC (Sound Transmission Class) measures airborne sound, voices, music, and TV audio that travel through the floor structure. IIC (Impact Insulation Class) measures impact sound, footsteps, dropped objects, and vibrations transmitted through physical contact with the floor.

Building codes for multi-family construction typically require a minimum STC of 50 and IIC of 50 for floor-ceiling assemblies. Higher numbers mean better sound isolation. A bare concrete slab with no flooring might score IIC 28. Add cork underlayment and luxury vinyl, and you reach IIC 60 to 72. Carpet tile (modular carpet squares) offers similar acoustic performance with easier maintenance. Luxury Vinyl With Acoustic Underlayment

  • Cork underlayment (3mm to 6mm): Adds 10 to 15 IIC points. Natural, sustainable, and doubles as a moisture barrier when paired with a plastic film. $0.50 to $1.25 per sq ft.
  • Rubber underlayment (2mm to 5mm): Adds 12 to 20 IIC points. Denser and more effective than foam for impact noise. $0.50 to $1.00 per sq ft.

Check your vinyl flooring manufacturer’s requirements before adding underlayment. Some products void the warranty if used with a third-party underlayment, especially products that already have attached backing.

Engineered Hardwood Strategies for Noise Control

Hardwood floors are inherently noisy. Hard surfaces reflect sound rather than absorbing it, and floating installations can develop a hollow, drum-like quality. To minimize noise with hardwood, focus on installation method and underlayment selection.

Glue-down installation eliminates the air gap between flooring and subfloor that causes the hollow sound in floating floors. Every plank bonds directly to the surface, producing a solid, quiet feel. Nail-down installation on plywood also performs well acoustically.

If floating installation is your only option (concrete slab, for example), invest in premium acoustic underlayment. A combination of 3mm cork underlayment topped with engineered hardwood achieves IIC ratings in the 55 to 65 range, acceptable for most residential situations and compliant with many condo association requirements.

Soundproofing a Home Office or Studio

Home offices above bedrooms, music practice rooms, and podcasting studios require higher levels of sound control than typical residential spaces. A multi-layer approach delivers the best results.

Start with a decoupled subfloor: resilient channel or sound isolation clips attached to the joists, topped with a layer of 5/8-inch drywall, then plywood or OSB as the subfloor. Add mass-loaded vinyl over the plywood, followed by acoustic underlayment, and finish with cork or carpet. This assembly can achieve STC 55 to 65 and IIC 65 to 75, rivaling commercial sound studio construction.
