The marketing pushes thicker SPC like it always wins, but the reality is more nuanced. SPC flooring thickness ranges from 3.2mm budget products up to 8mm premium planks, and the right choice depends on subfloor condition, wear demand, and how much you can spend per sq ft. After installing thousands of square feet across both extremes, the gap between 4mm and 6mm is usually larger than the gap between 6mm and 8mm; the diminishing returns kick in fast.

What Thickness Actually Includes

Total plank thickness combines four layers: wear layer (measured in mils, not mm), decorative film (about 0.07mm), SPC core (the bulk of the plank), and an optional pre-attached underlay (typically 1mm to 1.5mm IXPE foam). A 5mm plank with attached underlay reads as 5mm on the package but performs like 4mm of structural plank plus 1mm of foam. Always read the spec sheet for the breakdown; manufacturers occasionally bundle the underlay into the headline number to look more competitive.

The wear layer is the only part that resists scratching. Common wear layers are 6 mil (0.15mm), 12 mil (0.3mm), 20 mil (0.5mm), and 28 mil (0.7mm). Thicker wear layers extend the life of the surface independent of overall thickness.

Pros and Cons of Thicker SPC

Thicker planks bridge subfloor imperfections, sound less hollow, and feel more like real wood underfoot. They also accept deeper embossing, which improves visual realism. The downsides are price, weight (8mm planks are heavy to handle on a long install), reduced flexibility around obstacles, and tighter clearances under doors which often need door undercuts. Thicker doesn’t always mean better; on a perfectly flat slab with light residential traffic, 5mm performs nearly identically to 8mm and saves $1.50 per sq ft.

Subfloor Flatness by Thickness

Thicker SPC reduces sound transmission to floors below, but the difference between 5mm and 8mm is small (around 2 to 3 IIC points). Underlay quality matters more than core thickness for acoustic performance. A 5mm SPC over a quality 1.5mm IXPE underlay typically delivers IIC 65, suitable for most condos. Thicker underlays (3mm cork or rubber) push to IIC 70-plus but cost more and reduce floor stiffness slightly. For multi-family residences, check the building’s IIC requirement before choosing thickness and underlay.

Pre-attached underlay simplifies installation but isn’t always the highest-performing option. For sound-critical projects, separate underlays optimized for SPC click systems often perform better than the bonded foam.

Buying Tips for SPC Flooring Thickness

Don’t buy on thickness alone. Verify the wear layer (mil rating), warranty length (residential and commercial both, if applicable), formaldehyde rating (CARB Phase 2 minimum), and brand reputation. Always order samples and walk on them; the feel difference between 5mm and 8mm is something you experience, not measure. Buy 8% to 10% extra for waste; rigid SPC planks chip during cuts more than flexible LVP, raising the actual usable yield.

Time purchases around major sales windows (Memorial Day, Labor Day, Black Friday). Discounts of 15% to 30% on national chains are common during those windows. Closeout patterns from previous seasons often drop another 20% and offer the same wear layer and core spec.
