The tread is the horizontal surface you step on, measured from the nose of one tread to the nose of the next. Within a single staircase, riser heights must not vary by more than 3/8 inch between the tallest and shortest. The same tolerance applies to tread depths. A staircase with 7-inch risers and 11-inch treads totals 25 inches and feels balanced. Stairs with 8-inch risers and 9-inch treads total 25 inches but feel cramped and steep. The formula is geometry catching up with biomechanics — the human stride is most natural in that 24 to 25 inch window.
Older homes often violate the 2R + T rule because pre-1970 stairs were built with steeper rises to save floor space. Stair Width and Headroom
Minimum stair width is 36 inches measured between handrails or between a handrail and the opposing wall. The clear width must not narrow at any point. For two-way pedestrian flow (kids racing parents up the stairs), 42 inches is more comfortable; 48 inches feels generous.
Headroom must be a minimum of 6 feet 8 inches measured vertically from the leading edge of any tread or the floor surface of a landing. Renovating a basement and finishing the underside of an upper staircase that previously had no ceiling drywall often triggers a headroom violation that requires either raising the ceiling above the stairs or accepting a code variance.
Nosing Requirements
The tread nose — the rounded or angled overhang at the front edge — must project 3/4 inch to 1-1/4 inch beyond the riser below it. Some open-riser modern stairs are allowed without nosings, but only if the tread depth is at least 11 inches. The nosing helps prevent toe-catching on the way up and provides visual depth perception on the way down.
Profile options include square (90-degree edge), rounded (1/4-inch radius), and bullnose (1/2 to 3/4-inch radius). Rounded is most common in residential wood stairs. Bullnose looks traditional and feels softest underfoot for kids without shoes. Square edges are the modern minimal look and work well with metal or stone treads.
Handrail Rules
- Minimum height: 34 inches above tread nose, maximum 38 inches
- Required on at least one side for any staircase with 4 or more risers
- Grip diameter: 1-1/4 to 2 inches for round rails, with equivalent perimeter for other shapes
- Continuous run: from top riser to bottom riser without breaks
- Returns at ends: the handrail must terminate in a wall return or a newel post to prevent clothing snags

Landings and Direction Changes

Winder treads — the pie-shaped treads that turn a corner without a full landing — are allowed in residential stairs. The tread depth measured 12 inches in from the narrow end must meet the 10-inch minimum. The narrow end must measure at least 6 inches deep. Building a code-compliant winder is harder than building straight runs and is where most DIY stair projects go sideways.
Stringer Sizing and Construction
Stair stringers are the 2×12 boards that support the treads and risers. For most residential stairs, three stringers spaced at the outer edges and center handle the load. The stringers must have at least 3-1/2 inches of solid wood remaining below the cutouts where treads sit. A standard cut stringer made from 2×12 lumber has exactly that 3-1/2 inches when the cuts are made correctly.
Stair stringers should be Douglas fir or southern yellow pine #2 grade or better for structural integrity. Spruce-pine-fir works but flexes more.
