Most homeowners obsess over the pump itself and completely overlook the container it sits in, yet that container quietly determines how well the whole system performs. What the Sump Tank Does
The tank is buried in the lowest point of your basement or crawlspace floor, and drainage tile or gravity feeds groundwater into it. As water accumulates, it fills the tank until the pump’s float switch trips and the pump empties it. The tank essentially buffers incoming water so the pump can run in efficient cycles rather than constantly.
A properly sized tank gives the pump enough water volume per cycle to run long enough to be efficient, but not so much that water sits stagnant. That balance protects the pump and keeps your basement dry.
Sizing the Tank Correctly
Tank size is measured by diameter and depth, and getting it right prevents short-cycling, the rapid on-off pattern that burns out pumps. Common residential dimensions:

- Larger basin — 24 inches or more in diameter for high water tables or higher-capacity pumps.

A tank that’s too small fills instantly and forces the pump to cycle constantly, while an oversized tank in a low-water home lets water sit and turn foul. Match the tank to your water inflow and pump capacity for the best result.
Tank Materials
Sump basins are almost always made of durable plastics engineered to resist the constant moisture and pressure of being buried:
- Polyethylene — the most common, tough, corrosion-proof, and available with pre-drilled or knockout inlet holes.
- Structural foam or heavy-duty plastic — thicker walls for demanding installations and better resistance to soil pressure.
- Fiberglass — used in some heavy-duty and commercial applications for extra strength.
Look for a basin with perforations or knockouts around the sides and bottom so drainage water can enter freely. A solid-walled tank without inlets only collects water that drains from above, which limits its effectiveness.
The Importance of a Sealed Lid
An often-overlooked feature is the lid, and it does more than keep debris out. A sealed, airtight lid serves several purposes:
- Radon control — in areas with radon, a sealed lid with a gasket prevents the gas from entering your basement through the pit.
- Humidity reduction — an open pit evaporates water into the basement air, raising humidity and encouraging mold.
- Safety — a secured lid keeps children, pets, and tools from falling into the pit.
Choose a lid with grommets or sealed pass-throughs for the discharge pipe and power cord. This small upgrade dramatically improves basement air quality and is well worth specifying.
Installing a Sump Tank
Installing a new tank is a substantial project because it involves breaking through the concrete floor. It’s doable for an ambitious DIYer but many homeowners hire it out. The basic process:
- Locate the lowest point of the basement and mark a hole a few inches wider than the tank.
- Break out the concrete and excavate a pit deep enough for the tank plus a gravel base.
- Add several inches of gravel at the bottom for drainage and to keep silt out of the basin.
- Set the tank level, connect any drainage tile to the inlet holes, and backfill around it with gravel.
- Pour fresh concrete around the rim to lock the tank in place and restore the floor.
- Install the pump, discharge pipe, and sealed lid once the concrete has cured.
The gravel base is critical; it lets water enter from below and keeps the tank from settling or floating. Take time to get the tank perfectly level so the float switch and pump operate correctly.
Maintaining Your Sump Tank
The tank itself is low-maintenance, but sediment and debris accumulate over time and can clog the pump intake or jam the float. Every few months, remove the lid and clear any gravel, silt, or debris from the bottom of the basin.
Check that the inlet holes aren’t blocked and that the float has clearance to move freely against the tank wall. Keeping the tank clean protects the pump and ensures water flows in and out the way the system was designed to work.
Signs Your Tank Needs Attention
A sump tank rarely fails outright, but several warning signs tell you it needs service or replacement. If your pump runs constantly or cycles on and off every few seconds, the tank may be undersized or clogged with sediment that reduces its effective volume. Standing water that never fully drains points to blocked inlet holes or a pump set too high in the basin.
A musty smell rising from the pit usually means the lid isn’t sealed and stagnant water is evaporating into the room. Cracks in the tank wall, common in older thin-walled basins, let silt and soil intrude and can eventually cause the tank to leak or collapse under soil pressure. If you notice any of these, inspect the basin closely. Often a thorough cleaning and a new sealed lid restore performance, but a cracked or badly undersized tank is worth replacing while the floor is already open.
