More homeowners get hurt assuming a circuit is dead than from any tool they pick up. Testing electricity before you touch a wire is the single habit that separates a safe project from a trip to the emergency room. The good news is that the tools are inexpensive and the methods are simple, as long as you follow them every single time.   2. Test your NCVT or multimeter on a known-live outlet to prove the tool works.

Actual wiring repairs, panel work, adding circuits, and diagnosing faults that you cannot trace are not. If you find scorched insulation, repeated breaker trips, aluminum branch wiring, or anything you do not fully understand, stop and hire a licensed electrician.
