Liquid membranes are rolled, brushed, or troweled on and cure into a seamless rubbery film. They excel at coating irregular shapes, corners, drains, and pipe penetrations where a sheet would be awkward to fit. The catch is that you must apply them at the manufacturer’s specified thickness, often verified with a wet-film gauge, or the waterproofing can fail. How a Membrane Is Installed

First, the subfloor is cleaned, leveled, and checked for soundness. Loose or damaged areas are repaired, because a membrane cannot fix a structurally bad subfloor.
Next, a layer of thin-set mortar appropriate to the product is troweled onto the subfloor, and the membrane is pressed firmly into it with a float or roller to eliminate air pockets. Seams are overlapped or sealed per the instructions. For waterproofing applications, seams, corners, and penetrations get special seam tape or sealant so the barrier is continuous. Once the membrane has set, tile is installed directly on top with another layer of thin-set.
