Types of Electric Wire: A Homeowner’s Guide to Choosing Right

Grab the wrong wire for a circuit and you risk overheating, a tripped breaker, or worse — a fire inside your walls. Knowing the common types of electric wire is the difference between a safe DIY project and an expensive call to an electrician. Wire is sorted by what it’s made of, how thick it is, what jacket protects it, and how many amps it can safely carry. This guide walks through the main categories, the gauges that matter for home circuits, and how to match wire to the job without guesswork.

Understanding Wire Gauge and Amperage

Before the wire types, understand gauge. American Wire Gauge (AWG) measures thickness, and the rule is counterintuitive: the smaller the number, the thicker the wire and the more current it carries. Thicker wire handles more amps without overheating.

  • 14 AWG: 15-amp circuits — lighting and general outlets.
  • 12 AWG: 20-amp circuits — kitchen, bathroom, and garage outlets.

Color coding makes identification easy: white jackets are 14-gauge, yellow is 12-gauge, and orange is 10-gauge. NM-B is rated for dry, indoor, protected locations only — never bury it or run it outdoors exposed.

THHN/THWN: Individual Conductors for Conduit

When wiring runs through metal or PVC conduit, electricians use single THHN or THWN conductors rather than sheathed cable. THHN stands for Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon-coated, rated to 90 degrees Celsius in dry locations. The THWN version adds water resistance for damp runs. These wires come in spools of individual colors — black and red for hot, white for neutral, green for ground — and are the standard for garages, basements, and commercial work where conduit protects the conductors.

UF-B Cable: Built for Underground and Outdoors

Underground Feeder cable, or UF-B, looks similar to Romex but the conductors are molded into a solid, moisture-proof gray jacket. That construction lets you bury it directly in a trench or run it to outdoor fixtures, sheds, and landscape lighting. Direct-burial UF-B must sit at least 24 inches deep, or 18 inches under a concrete slab, depending on local code. It’s the right wire any time the run leaves the protected interior of your home.

Other Wire Types Worth Knowing

Beyond the big three, a few specialized cables show up in home projects.

  • THHN single strand vs. stranded: solid for permanent runs, stranded for flexibility.
  • Low-voltage wire: thermostat, doorbell, and landscape lighting at 12 to 24 volts.
  • Coaxial and Cat6: data and signal, not power.
  • Service entrance (SE) cable: heavy aluminum or copper feeding the main panel.
  • Armored cable (MC/BX): a flexible metal jacket protecting the conductors.

Each has a defined job, and mixing them up — like using doorbell wire for an outlet — is both a code violation and a safety hazard.

Copper vs. Aluminum Conductors

Most residential wiring uses copper because it conducts better and resists corrosion. Aluminum still appears in large feeders and service entrances because it’s lighter and cheaper for thick runs. Homes wired with aluminum branch circuits in the 1960s and 70s are a known fire risk, since aluminum expands and loosens at connections. If you own one, have an electrician inspect the terminations and add COPALUM or AlumiConn connectors.

Reading the Markings on a Wire

Every legitimate electrical wire is printed with a string of letters and numbers that tells you exactly what it is. Learning to read that stamp removes the guesswork. The gauge and conductor count appear as something like “12-2 WITH GROUND,” meaning 12-gauge wire with two insulated conductors plus a bare ground. The insulation type follows — THHN, THWN, XHHW — each letter describing a property: T for thermoplastic, H for heat-resistant, W for wet-location rated, and N for nylon coating. A voltage rating, usually 600 volts for residential building wire, is printed alongside. When you stand in the aisle unsure which spool to buy, the printing on the jacket settles the question.

Common Wiring Mistakes to Avoid

Most dangerous wiring traces back to a handful of repeated errors. Avoid these and you eliminate the bulk of the risk.

  • Undersizing the wire for the breaker — the most common fire cause.
  • Running indoor NM-B outdoors where it degrades and lets in moisture.
  • Overfilling a junction box beyond its cubic-inch capacity.
  • Leaving connections loose, which arc and overheat.
  • Mixing copper and aluminum at terminals not rated for it.

A single loose wire nut or an undersized conductor can smolder inside a wall for weeks before it ignites, which is why careful terminations matter as much as choosing the right wire.

Matching the Right Wire to the Job

Choosing among the types of electric wire comes down to three questions: how many amps, where does it run, and is it wet or dry. A 15-amp bedroom circuit gets 14-gauge NM-B. A 20-amp kitchen circuit needs 12-gauge. An outdoor outlet calls for UF-B and a GFCI. When in doubt, size up a gauge — it costs a few dollars more and runs cooler.

Electrical work is unforgiving of mistakes. If a project involves the main panel, new circuits, or anything you’re unsure about, hire a licensed electrician and pull a permit. The cost of doing it right is always cheaper than the cost of doing it twice.
