“Watercloset” is the original term for a flushing toilet, dating back to the 1880s when the first water-flushed fixtures replaced chamber pots in British and American homes. Today the term still appears on architectural plans (often abbreviated WC) and in plumbing code documents. Understanding what makes a watercloset work — and what to look for when you replace one — saves money, water, and weekend headaches. How a Watercloset Actually Flushes

The flush mechanics are simple physics. A storage tank holds 1.28 to 1.6 gallons of water above the bowl.
