Weatherstripping for Windows: Types and Install

Hold a lit incense stick along a window sash on a windy January day and watch the smoke go sideways — that moving air is money leaving the house, and in most homes the windows leak worst not through the glass but around the sash. Weatherstripping for windows is the cheapest energy retrofit that exists: $30 to $80 of material can seal an entire house’s windows in a weekend, with payback measured in months. But the products are not interchangeable — the right seal for a double-hung sash channel is the wrong one for a casement, and the $4 felt roll that worked in 1955 is the worst option on the shelf. Here are the five window weatherstripping types, which windows each fits, install technique that lasts, and what the savings actually look like. First, Find the Leaks

Ten minutes of diagnosis beats guessing. On a breezy day (or with a box fan exhausting out a distant window to depressurize the house), move an incense stick or a damp hand around each window: along the meeting rail of double-hungs, the bottom sash-to-sill joint, the side channels, and the frame-to-wall trim line. Flickering smoke marks sash leaks — weatherstripping territory. Leaks at the trim-to-wall joint are caulk territory instead; weatherstripping only seals moving parts against fixed parts. Mark each leaky window with painter’s tape and note which joint leaks, because that determines the product.

The Five Types, Ranked by Job

V-seal (V-strip / tension seal) — the double-hung champion

A folded strip of springy vinyl (self-stick, ~$5–$8 per 17-ft roll; M-D and Frost King everywhere) or bronze (nail-on, ~$15–$25 per roll, the century-home classic). The V opens like a leaf spring and presses against the sash as it slides — it seals moving joints without adding friction thick foams cause. Best for: double-hung side channels and meeting rails, sliding window tracks. Vinyl V-seal lasts 3 to 5 years; nailed bronze lasts decades and is what restorers put in old wood windows.

Foam tape — the compression workhorse

Self-adhesive open- or closed-cell foam, $3–$8 per roll in thicknesses from 1/8 to 1/2 inch. It seals joints that press together: the bottom of a lower sash against the sill, the top of the upper sash, casement and awning sash-to-frame stops. Wrong for sliding surfaces — it shreds. Buy closed-cell or EPDM-skinned foam for anything exposed to condensation; bargain open-cell crushes flat and quits in a season or two. Match thickness to the measured gap with the “close on a dollar bill” test — the seal should grip the bill snugly, not require slamming.

Tubular rubber gasket — the premium compression seal

Hollow EPDM tubes or bulbs ($8–$15 per roll, self-stick or flanged/kerf-mount) that compress like a refrigerator door gasket. Best sealing performance and cold-weather flexibility of any compression type, 5 to 10 year life. Use on casement and awning windows (the crank pulls the sash into the bulb — exactly how these windows were designed to seal), on the sill joint of leaky double-hungs, and as replacement for factory kerf gaskets in newer windows (pull the old gasket from its slot and press in matching kerf seal — check profiles at a window-parts supplier like SWISCO before defaulting to stick-on).

Felt — the legacy option

Wool or synthetic felt strips, plain or metal-backed, $3–$5. Cheap, period-appropriate, easy to tack on — and the poorest performer: it wears within a year or two, seals badly against air pressure, and holds moisture. Justifiable only in low-use interior applications or historical restorations where visible materials matter. If the store has V-seal, walk past the felt.

Rope caulk — the seasonal specialist

Soft, putty-like cord (Mortite is the classic, ~$5 for 90 ft) pressed by finger into gaps in the fall and peeled off in spring. It is removable, paint-safe, and the correct answer for two cases: sealing windows you will not open all winter (including locking the meeting-rail gap on drafty double-hungs) and odd-shaped gaps in old, out-of-square sashes that no strip product fits. Zero durability as a permanent seal — that is not its job.

Install by Window Type

Double-hung

  1. Clean sash channels and stops with rubbing alcohol; adhesive fails on dusty paint.
  2. Run V-seal up each side channel of the lower sash (V opening toward the exterior), cutting around hardware. Lower the top sash and do its channels if it moves.
  3. Stick V-seal or a slim bulb along the back of the meeting rail so the two sashes seal when locked — locking the window is part of the seal; unlocked double-hungs leak at this rail no matter what.
  4. Foam tape or tubular gasket on the underside of the bottom rail, where it lands on the sill; same on top of the upper rail.
  5. Test operation. If sashes bind, the foam is too thick — swap to a thinner profile rather than forcing it.

Casement and awning

Replace or supplement the compression seal on the frame stop with tubular rubber or quality closed-cell foam, positioned so the sash crushes it evenly when cranked tight; adjust the latch keeper if the sash no longer pulls fully home. Kerf-mounted replacements beat stick-ons on windows that have the slot.

Sliders

Treat like a sideways double-hung: V-seal or fin-type pile in the vertical channels the sash slides through, foam or bulb where the sash parks against the jamb, and replacement pile weatherstrip (fuzzy strip with a plastic fin, sold by the foot) in the tracks of aluminum sliders — pull the sash, slide out the worn factory pile, slide in new.

Technique Details That Decide Longevity

  • Surface prep is 80 percent of adhesive life: clean with alcohol, let dry, and install above 50°F (or warm the strip and surface with a hair dryer in cold weather — cold-applied adhesive lets go by February).
  • Cut with scissors or a sharp knife against a block for square ends; butt corners tight, no overlaps that hold the sash proud.
  • Press, don’t stretch. Stretched vinyl V-seal creeps back and opens gaps at the ends.
  • Don’t seal the weep holes on the exterior bottom of vinyl and aluminum windows — those drain rainwater, and blocking them floods the sill.
  • Pair with caulk: stationary gaps at trim get sealant, and wide junk gaps get backer rod plus caulk; weatherstrip handles only the operable joints.

Shopping List for a Typical House

For a home with ten operable windows, a practical cart looks like this: two 17-foot rolls of vinyl V-seal ($12–$16) for double-hung channels and meeting rails; one roll each of 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch closed-cell foam tape ($8–$14) so you can match different sill gaps; a roll of EPDM bulb gasket ($10–$15) for the casements; one package of Mortite rope caulk ($5) for the windows that stay shut all winter; and a bottle of rubbing alcohol with rags for prep. Total: $40 to $60, one shopping trip, and the whole job fits in a Saturday. Skip multi-packs of felt no matter how cheap they look, and resist the temptation to buy one thickness of foam for every window — the dollar-bill fit test window by window is what separates a seal that works from one that either leaks or makes the sash impossible to lock.

What You Will Actually Save

Air leakage accounts for roughly a quarter to a third of heating and cooling load in an average existing home, and windows and doors are consistently among the top offenders. The Department of Energy pegs savings from comprehensive air sealing (weatherstripping plus caulking) at 10 to 20 percent of heating and cooling costs — call it $80 to $250 per year for a typical $1,200 annual HVAC spend, more in leaky pre-1980 housing and harsh climates. Per-window math is humbler but still compelling: a badly leaking double-hung can waste $5 to $20 a season, and a whole-house kit of V-seal, foam, and rope caulk costs $40 to $90 — the retrofit routinely pays back inside one heating season. Comfort improves faster than the bills do: eliminating the cold draft across a couch or bed is the benefit people mention first. Recheck seals each fall with the incense stick, replace crushed foam every few seasons, and windows stay sealed for the cost of a pizza a year.
