Two Types of Well Pumps

Which pump you need depends on how deep your water is.

  • Submersible pumps sit at the bottom of the well, fully underwater, and push water up to the house. They’re the standard for deep wells, from about 25 feet down to several hundred, and they’re efficient and quiet because the water column doesn’t have to be sucked up, it’s pushed. Most modern wells use these.
  • Jet pumps sit above ground, at the wellhead or in a basement, and suck water up. Sizing the Pump

A pump is sized by flow (gallons per minute) and by the pressure it must overcome, expressed as total dynamic head. Undersize it and fixtures starve during simultaneous use; oversize it and you waste energy and can overpump a low-yield well.

A rough target for a typical home is 8 to 12 GPM to run multiple fixtures at once, and many households land on a 1/2 to 1 horsepower submersible. The correct horsepower depends on your well depth and the vertical lift to the house, plus the horizontal run. Because getting head calculation wrong shortens pump life, this sizing is worth confirming with a pro even if you plan to do part of the work yourself.

The Pressure Tank and Switch

  2. Pull the old pump (on a replacement) by lifting the drop pipe and safety rope out of the casing, often 100-plus feet of pipe and wire, which is heavy and awkward and usually needs a hoist or two people.
  3. Assemble the new pump to the drop pipe, attach the submersible wire and a torque arrestor, and secure a stainless safety rope to the pitless adapter.
  4. Lower the pump down the casing to the correct depth, connecting the pitless adapter that routes water horizontally underground to the house below the frost line.
  5. Wire the pump through the control box (for three-wire pumps) and pressure switch, following the manufacturer’s diagram and local electrical code.
  6. Set the pressure tank precharge, connect it, and install the pressure switch and gauge.
  7. Restore power, prime as needed, and test. Watch the pressure build to cut-out, check for leaks, and confirm the pump cuts in and out at the set pressures.
