Live wires found behind drywall during a remodel send roughly 51,000 Americans to the emergency room every year for shock injuries, and around 500 of those incidents end in fatal electrocution. Knowing what to do with unused live electrical wires is not optional knowledge for any homeowner planning a renovation, mounting a TV on an old plaster wall, or pulling out a hardwired appliance. The National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 314 is unambiguous: live conductors must be terminated in an accessible junction box with an approved cover plate, never abandoned inside a wall.
Confirm the Wire Is Actually Live
Before touching anything, test the wire. A Klein NCVT-2 non-contact voltage tester at $26 detects 50 to 1,000 VAC at a safe distance. Hold the tip near the conductor; a steady tone and red light mean voltage present. Double-check with a multimeter set to AC volts on the 200 V range — touch the black probe to the ground or neutral and the red probe to each suspect conductor.
Never trust a single test. About 12 percent of non-contact testers give false negatives on shielded or buried cables. Confirm the breaker is off by also unplugging the test light to verify both the tester and circuit really are de-energized.
Step One: Kill Power at the Breaker
Identify the circuit at your main panel. If breakers are not labeled, plug a lamp into a nearby outlet and flip breakers one at a time until the lamp goes dark. Tape over the breaker handle with electrical tape and write “DO NOT OPERATE” on a lockout tag — a $12 Brady tagout from Home Depot prevents another household member from energizing the line while you work.
For 240 V circuits like dryers and ranges, both legs of the double-pole breaker must be off. Test all conductors with your meter before touching anything.
The NEC Rules for Abandoned Wires
NEC 300.12 requires that wires be continuous between accessible junction points. Cutting a hot wire and stuffing it behind drywall violates code in every US jurisdiction. You have three compliant options:
- Terminate in a junction box with a blank cover plate that remains accessible. Boxes hidden behind permanent finishes like tile or drywall violate NEC 314.29.
- Remove the entire run back to the source — usually the panel, a switch box, or another junction.
- Reuse the circuit by extending it to a new fixture, outlet, or switch.
Twisting wire nuts on bare conductors and leaving them loose in a wall cavity is not legal. Inspectors fail this on every walkthrough.
How to Cap Wires in a Junction Box
Buy a 4 by 4 inch metal or PVC junction box rated for the wire gauge running into it. For standard 14-gauge or 12-gauge Romex (NM-B cable), a 2-1/8 inch deep box gives you cubic-inch capacity for up to 6 conductors plus a ground. Secure the box to a stud with two 1-1/4 inch wood screws and clamp the incoming cable with an internal Romex connector.
Strip 3/4 inch of insulation from each conductor with a Klein 11055 stripper. Twist the hot, neutral, and ground separately under a properly sized wire nut — Ideal Wing-Nut 452 (yellow) handles two 12-gauge conductors. Tug-test each connection. Push the bundled wires gently into the box, install a blank cover plate, and label the breaker location on the cover with a permanent marker.
When Removal Is Better Than Capping
If the abandoned circuit served a removed fixture and the wire runs back to a clean source, pulling it out beats capping. A loose end inside a covered wall is one home renovation away from becoming a fire hazard — Sheetrock screws love to find Romex. Pull the cable at the panel after a licensed electrician disconnects the breaker, then trace and free the run through the framing.
Communications cable (Cat5, coax, doorbell wire) carries less than 30 V and can be abandoned per NEC 800.25, but most inspectors still prefer it removed during major renovations.
Special Case: Knob-and-Tube and Aluminum Wiring
Pre-1950 homes often still have knob-and-tube wiring with cloth insulation. Abandoned K&T conductors crumble when disturbed and are not safely cappable inside an enclosure. Call a licensed electrician — most insurers will not renew a homeowner policy if they discover active K&T during a re-inspection.
Aluminum branch wiring from 1965 to 1973 oxidizes at connection points and overheats. If you find aluminum conductors with abandoned ends, do not just cap them. Have an electrician install COPALUM crimps or Alumiconn connectors approved by the CPSC.
When to Stop and Call an Electrician
Hire a licensed pro for any of these scenarios:
- The wire is part of a multi-wire branch circuit sharing a neutral between two hots.
- You cannot identify which breaker controls the line.
- The conductor is aluminum, K&T, or pre-1972 with degraded insulation.

- Your local jurisdiction requires a permit and inspection for any electrical work.

Permits, Inspections, and Documentation
Local code in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and Denver requires a permit even for minor electrical work like adding a junction box. Your municipal building department will charge $40 to $150 for the permit and schedule an inspection within 7 to 10 days. Document everything you do with photos before drywall closes — future renovators (and home inspectors) will thank you when they can locate the capped junction without opening every wall.
