An electric range pulls 30 to 50 amps under heavy load — enough current to melt the wrong-gauge cable inside your wall within minutes. Selecting the right wire for stove circuits isn’t a guess; the NEC, the appliance nameplate, and your one-way run length together dictate exactly what to install. Get any of those wrong and you face nuisance breaker trips at best, a wall fire at worst. Here’s how electricians decide what to run before they pull permits.

Start With the Stove’s Nameplate
Every electric range has a metal nameplate behind the lower drawer or kick panel listing volts, amps, and kilowatts. Most modern 30-inch ranges fall into one of three categories:
- Standard freestanding electric range (GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool): 40-amp circuit, 12 to 14 kW
- High-output professional ranges (Wolf, Viking, Thermador electric): 50-amp circuit, 15 to 18 kW
- Slide-in induction (Bosch, KitchenAid): 30 to 40 amp circuit, 7 to 11 kW
NEC 220.55 actually allows demand factor calculations that reduce the required circuit size below the nameplate rating, but most inspectors require sizing to the nameplate amperage unless an engineer signs off on a load calc. Default to the nameplate.
Wire Gauge by Amperage
The two most common configurations:
- 40-amp circuit: 8 AWG copper conductors, 8/3 NM-B (Romex) with ground
- 50-amp circuit: 6 AWG copper conductors, 6/3 NM-B with ground
NM-B cable from Southwire or Cerrowire runs $2.80 to $4.40 per foot for 8/3 and $4.20 to $6.50 per foot for 6/3 at Home Depot. Aluminum SE cable is acceptable for some installations at lower cost but requires antioxidant compound at terminations and is rejected by many local amendments.
Voltage Drop on Long Runs
For runs over 50 feet from the panel, voltage drop becomes a real concern. The NEC informational note recommends keeping voltage drop under 3 percent. A 50-amp circuit running 75 feet on 6 AWG copper drops about 2.4 percent — acceptable. The same run on 8 AWG would drop 3.8 percent and cause slow heating elements and inverter chatter on induction surfaces.
If your run exceeds 70 feet, bump one wire size larger than the breaker would normally require.
Three-Wire vs Four-Wire Receptacles
NEC 250.140 has required four-wire range receptacles in new construction since 1996. The four-wire (NEMA 14-50R for 50 amp, 14-30R for 30 amp dryer or 40-amp range) keeps the neutral and ground separate so the stove chassis isn’t bonded to the neutral current path.
Older homes with three-wire receptacles (NEMA 10-50R) can keep them under grandfathered status, but any new circuit must be four-wire. If you’re replacing the stove and the receptacle is three-prong, leave it alone unless you’re rewiring back to the panel — converting just the receptacle without a separate ground wire is a code violation.
Breakers and Panel Considerations
Use double-pole breakers matched to the conductor size:
- 40-amp circuit: Square D HOM240, Eaton BR240, or Siemens Q240 ($14 to $28)
- 50-amp circuit: Same brands in 50-amp version ($16 to $34)
Verify panel space and amperage capacity before pulling a permit. A 200-amp service panel typically has room, but 100-amp panels in older homes may already be loaded above 80 percent and need an upgrade. Service upgrades to 200 amps run $1,800 to $4,500 from a licensed electrician.
Conduit, Raceway, and Cable Routing
NM-B cable runs concealed inside walls, attics, or crawl spaces. Where the wire emerges into a kitchen behind the range, terminate inside a junction box or use a flexible whip rated for the amperage. Exposed cable behind cabinets isn’t allowed by NEC 334.10 in most jurisdictions.
If running through a basement ceiling joist, use approved staples within 12 inches of every junction box and every 4.5 feet thereafter. Drilled holes must be at least 1.25 inches back from the joist edge to prevent drywall screws from piercing the cable.
Pigtail vs Hardwire
Most stoves come without a cord — you buy the pigtail separately to match your receptacle. A 50-amp four-wire pigtail runs $32 to $55. Match the gauge of the pigtail to the circuit (6 AWG for 50 amps, 8 AWG for 40 amps). Tighten lugs to the torque spec stamped on the terminal block, typically 35 to 45 inch-pounds. Loose lugs are the leading cause of overheated stove connections.
Permits and Inspection
Adding or replacing a range circuit requires an electrical permit in nearly every jurisdiction. Fees run $35 to $180 plus a rough-in inspection and a final inspection. Skip the permit and a future home sale inspection report will catch it, often costing 3 to 5 times more to retrofit and re-inspect.
When to Call a Pro
If you’ve never pulled cable, terminated lugs, or worked inside a live panel, hire a licensed electrician. Range circuit installation typically runs $400 to $1,200 depending on run length and panel access. The right wire for stove installs gets verified by the inspector, signed off, and forgotten about — exactly how home electrical should work.
Gas Range Considerations
If you’re replacing a gas range with electric or considering the reverse, the electrical requirements change drastically. A gas range needs only a standard 120-volt outlet for the igniter, clock, and oven light — a single 15-amp circuit with 14 AWG wire serves it. The same kitchen converting to an induction or electric range needs a full 40 or 50-amp 240-volt circuit pulled from the panel. If you don’t already have that wiring in place, expect $700 to $2,500 in additional electrical work depending on panel distance and finished wall complexity.
The reverse swap — replacing electric with gas — leaves you with an oversized circuit that’s safe to leave in place but won’t serve much purpose. Don’t downsize the breaker since the circuit is still rated for the heavier wire. Just cap the unused terminals with proper wire nuts and label the breaker as future use.
Dual-Fuel Range Wiring
Dual-fuel ranges (gas cooktop with electric oven) from Wolf, Thermador, and Bertazzoni typically need a 30 to 40-amp circuit plus a gas line. The electric oven side pulls 4 to 6 kW, less than a full electric range but still requiring 240-volt service. Verify the nameplate before sizing — high-end dual-fuel units can require up to 50 amps despite the gas cooktop.
Subpanel and Range Combinations
Homes with detached garages, ADUs, or basement kitchens sometimes feed a range from a subpanel. The wire sizing rules still apply, but you also need to consider the subpanel’s main breaker and the feeder wire to the subpanel. If the subpanel is fed by 8 AWG copper (40-amp feeder), you can’t run a 50-amp range circuit off it without first upgrading the feeder. NEC 215.2 covers feeder sizing in detail. Skipping this verification leads to a properly sized range circuit feeding off an undersized supply, which is one of the more common code violations I see in older home renovations.
