The first fork in the road is whether your ceiling is open or closed. New-construction housings mount to the joists with bar hangers before the drywall goes up. Remodel (also called “old work”) housings are engineered to drop into an existing finished ceiling. Canless units connect at a small junction box with the familiar hot, neutral, and ground — black to black, white to white, ground to the green or bare — capped with wire nuts and tucked back in.
