Steam radiators usually have an automatic vent that you do not bleed by hand, and if a steam vent is failing you typically replace it rather than open it. Most bleed valves take a radiator key, a small inexpensive tool sold at any hardware store for a couple of dollars. Many modern valves accept a flathead screwdriver in a slotted version, so check yours first. Beyond the key, grab an old towel or rag and a small cup or bowl to catch the water that follows the air. How to Bleed a Radiator Step by Step

Work carefully and you will not make a mess. Follow this sequence:

  1. Turn off the heat. Shut down the boiler or heating system and let the radiators cool for an hour or two. Bleeding a cold system is safer and prevents scalding water from spraying out.
  2. Find the valve. Locate the bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator and hold a rag and cup beneath it.
  3. Open it slowly. Fit the key onto the valve and turn it counterclockwise about a quarter to half a turn. You should hear a hiss as air escapes. Do not open it all the way.
  4. Wait for water. When the hissing stops and a steady trickle of water appears with no more sputtering, the air is out.
  5. Close it firmly. Turn the key clockwise to close the valve. Snug is enough; overtightening can strip the soft brass.
  6. Wipe up and repeat. Dry the area and move to the next radiator.

At the bottom of most hot-water radiators sit two larger valves: the control valve, which turns the radiator on and off and may be a manual wheel head or a thermostatic radiator valve that adjusts heat based on room temperature, and the lockshield valve on the opposite end, which balances flow across the system and is usually left capped.

None of these is the air bleed valve. The bleed valve is the small fitting up top, and it is the only one you operate with a radiator key for releasing trapped air. If your radiator stays cold even after bleeding and the control valve is open, the thermostatic head may be stuck, which is a separate fix from bleeding air.
