Are Flies Attracted to Light: What You Need to Know

Walk into a butcher shop or a restaurant kitchen and you will see those blue-glowing UV light traps mounted near doorways. Which Fly Species Respond to Light

  • House flies (Musca domestica): Strongly attracted to UV light, especially during daylight hours. The primary target of commercial fly traps.
  • Cluster flies: Attracted to bright light, especially when seeking overwintering sites in fall.
  • Fruit flies (Drosophila): Mildly attracted to UV but much more responsive to fermenting food smells.
  • Drain flies: Almost no light attraction; they navigate by smell and moisture.
  • Horse flies and deer flies: Attracted to bright reflective surfaces and movement, less to specific wavelengths.
  • Stable flies: Moderately attracted to UV, also strongly drawn to dark contrast against light backgrounds.

Why UV Light Is the Specific Trigger

Insects see a different spectrum than humans. Their visible range extends into the UV-A band (315-400 nm) but stops short of red wavelengths. To a fly, the world is dominated by UV reflections from flowers, sky, and water — all important navigation cues.

Standard incandescent bulbs emit very little UV. Modern LEDs emit almost none. Fluorescent tubes emit some UV but not in the wavelengths flies prefer. UV-emitting bulbs (often labeled BL or BLB for blacklight blue) emit primarily in the 365-400 nm range that flies find most attractive.

How Bug Zappers Actually Work

A bug zapper combines a UV-emitting fluorescent tube with an electrified grid. Insects fly toward the UV light, contact the grid, and are killed by a brief high-voltage shock. They work, but they are indiscriminate — killing beneficial insects (moths, beetles, lacewings) at higher rates than they kill biting pests like mosquitoes.

Independent studies consistently show bug zappers catch fewer than 5% mosquitoes in their kill counts. They are most effective for house flies and other true Diptera that show strong UV phototaxis.

Better Alternatives for Indoor Fly Control

Commercial UV light traps with sticky boards (sold by brands like Catchmaster, Vector, and Insect-O-Cutor) are quieter than zappers, do not splatter insects across the room, and work well in restaurants, food prep areas, and homes. Expect $80 to $300 for a quality unit covering 600 to 1,200 sq ft.

Place traps 4 to 6 feet off the ground, away from competing light sources, and out of direct sunlight. The trap needs to be the brightest UV source in the area to draw flies effectively.

Outdoor Strategies

Outdoor bug zappers are mostly cosmetic theater. They draw insects from neighboring yards into your space, where they then disperse around the zapper. Studies suggest you actually attract more flies to your yard than you kill.

Better outdoor strategies include:

  1. Eliminate breeding sites — empty standing water, clean up pet waste, secure trash bins.
  2. Use yellow LED bulbs in porch and patio fixtures. They emit almost no UV and attract minimal insects.
  3. Install fans on outdoor seating areas. Flies cannot navigate well in even moderate airflow.

Yellow Bulbs and Sodium Lights

Yellow or amber LED bulbs marketed as “bug lights” emit primarily in the 570-590 nm range, which is well outside the UV sensitivity of most insects. They do not actually repel insects — they just fail to attract them. Replace porch and patio bulbs with these to dramatically reduce nighttime insect activity.

High-pressure sodium streetlights (the orange ones) attract significantly fewer insects than mercury vapor or LED white lights for the same reason. Many municipalities have switched to amber LEDs for both energy savings and reduced insect impact on local ecosystems.

Light Inside the House at Night

Flies in the house at night are usually not light-attracted; they were trapped indoors when the sun set and are seeking exit through any bright window. Standard practice is to dim interior lights and turn on a single porch light to draw them out, then close the door.

For persistent indoor fly problems, identify the entry point first. Window screens with holes, gaps under doors, and unsealed bathroom or kitchen vents are common culprits. A flashlight passed slowly along door and window frames at night reveals air gaps where flies enter.

What Does Not Work

Ultrasonic pest repellers do not work on flies. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have found no measurable effect. Citronella candles work mainly through smoke and odor masking, not as true repellents, and their effective range is about 3 feet downwind.

Essential oil sprays (peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree) provide brief deterrence at best, typically 30 minutes to 2 hours, and require constant reapplication. They are useful for short outdoor events but not as a control strategy.
