Bathroom Plumbing Diagram with Measurements: The Numbers That Matter

Get the rough-in dimensions wrong and you’re tearing out a finished wall to move a drain two inches. A reliable bathroom plumbing diagram with measurements is the single most useful sheet of paper during a remodel, because the IPC and UPC codes that govern most US jurisdictions specify every fixture’s height, distance, and pipe size to the inch. Frame and rough-in to those numbers and your inspector signs off the first time.

Toilet Rough-In Dimensions

Standard toilet rough-in is 12 inches from the finished wall to the center of the closet flange. That number assumes 1/2-inch drywall — measure from the stud face and add the wall thickness, or you’ll end up with a tank that won’t sit flat. Older homes sometimes use 10-inch or 14-inch rough-ins, so verify before ordering a bowl.

The cold water supply enters at 7 inches off the finished floor and 6 inches to the left of the flange centerline. Drain pipe is 3-inch ABS or PVC minimum, sloped at 1/4 inch per foot toward the main stack. Allow 15 inches of clearance from the flange center to any side wall and 21 inches in front for code-compliant access.

Vanity Sink Plumbing Heights

Drain rough-in for a standard 32-to-36-inch tall vanity sits between 18 and 20 inches above the finished floor, centered on the cabinet. Hot and cold supplies run 21 to 22 inches up, spaced 8 inches apart on center for widespread faucets, or 4 inches for centerset.

Use 1-1/2-inch drain piping for lavatory sinks. The trap arm cannot exceed 5 feet from the trap weir to the vent connection, and the vent must rise at least 6 inches above the flood rim of the sink before it can run horizontally. Skip those numbers and you get gurgling drains and slow water.

Tub and Shower Rough-In Numbers

The tub spout sits 4 inches above the tub deck. Mixing valve handles go 28 inches above the floor for a tub-shower combo, or 48 inches for a stand-alone shower. Showerhead height is 78 inches off the finished floor for an average household — bump it to 84 inches if anyone in the home is over 6 feet tall.

  • Tub overflow: connects 14-1/4 inches above floor on most standard 60-inch tubs
  • Shower drain: 2-inch pipe minimum (some codes now require 2-inch for any shower)

  • Supply lines: 1/2-inch copper, PEX, or CPVC to the valve

Pressure-balanced or thermostatic mixing valves are required by code in all 50 states for new shower installations as of 2023.

Drain, Waste, and Vent Stack Sizing

The main soil stack for a full bathroom is 3-inch ABS or PVC and rises through the roof as a vent. Branch drains feeding the toilet stay 3-inch. Sink and tub branches are 1-1/2-inch but tie into a 2-inch line before joining the main stack.

Vents must extend at least 6 inches above the roof penetration in non-freezing climates and 12 inches in regions where temperatures drop below 0°F — anything shorter ices over and stops venting. Air admittance valves are an option in some jurisdictions but check local code first; California allows them, much of the Northeast does not.

Distance Between Fixtures

Code minimums on fixture spacing dictate the entire room layout. Center of toilet to side wall: 15 inches. Center of toilet to anything else (vanity, tub, shower wall): 15 inches. Front of toilet to opposite wall or fixture: 21 inches code minimum, 30 inches recommended.

Vanity sink to side wall: 4 inches minimum from edge of countertop. Shower entry width: 22 inches code minimum, but 30 to 36 inches is realistic for a usable space.

Wet Wall Construction

The wet wall is the framed cavity that houses all bathroom plumbing. Use 2×6 studs instead of 2×4 to give 1-1/2 inch drains and 3-inch toilet stacks room to run vertically without notching. Bore holes within the center third of the stud, and stack any notch larger than 25% of stud width with a metal nail plate to keep drywall screws from puncturing pipe.

Insulate behind tubs and shower walls before the surround goes in. Once tile or fiberglass is up, you cannot reach those cavities without demo work.

Reading and Drawing Your Own Diagram

Sketch the bathroom on graph paper at 1/4 inch per foot. Mark every fixture footprint, then add supply lines in blue, drains in green, and vents in red. Label every measurement at the wall, floor, and centerline. Photograph the framing before drywall — that record saves you hours of guesswork next time you patch, replace, or remodel.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Shift even half an inch and the toilet bowl crowds the side wall or sits awkwardly far from it.

Too little slope (1/8 inch per foot) leaves solids stranded in the line. Too much slope (1/2 inch or more per foot) lets water race past solids, leaving them behind. Use a torpedo level on every horizontal section before backfilling or covering with subfloor.

Inadequate venting is the silent killer of bathroom plumbing. A drain without proper venting glug-glug-glugs, drains slowly, and pulls water out of trap seals — which lets sewer gas into the room. Every fixture needs a vent within the maximum trap arm length specified for its drain size, and that vent must rise vertically to the required height before going horizontal.
