Every house has two plumbing systems running side by side. The first is the supply system — pressurized cold and hot water lines that deliver to fixtures. The second is the DWV system (drain-waste-vent) — gravity-fed pipes that carry waste away and ventilate sewer gases through the roof. They never connect except at the fixture itself, where a P-trap holds water as a barrier between the two.
Mixing them up causes most DIY plumbing mistakes. A loose supply connection drips constantly under pressure; a loose drain connection leaks only during use. Diagnosing the problem starts with knowing which system the leak belongs to.
Supply Lines: How Water Reaches Fixtures
Water enters the home through the main supply line — typically 3/4″ or 1″ copper, PEX, or galvanized steel coming from the municipal water meter or well. The first valve inside the house is the main shutoff. Find this and label it; this is the valve that stops every emergency.
The line then splits. Cold water continues through the house in a network of branch lines feeding fixtures. A separate branch enters the water heater (electric or gas) where it heats and exits through a hot water line that mirrors the cold network. Sizing typically drops from 3/4″ main to 1/2″ branches at most fixtures, with 3/8″ supply tubes connecting branches to faucets and toilets.
Drain Lines: How Waste Leaves
- Trap arm — short horizontal pipe from fixture to vertical drain
- Branch drain — connects multiple fixtures, typically 1.5″ to 2″
- Stack — vertical pipe that gathers branches, usually 3″ or 4″

Vent Stacks: The Invisible Workhorses
Every drain has a vent. Vents open the system to atmospheric pressure so waste flows freely and prevent suction from siphoning water out of P-traps. Without working vents, drains gurgle, traps lose their water seal, and sewer gases enter the home through fixtures.
The main vent stack runs from the building drain straight up through the roof. Branch vents tie into it from individual fixtures. Air admittance valves (AAVs) like Studor vents replace traditional vent runs in island sinks and remodels where running a vent through the roof is impractical. AAVs are legal in most jurisdictions but check local codes.
Shutoff Valves: Know Where Each One Is
Every fixture should have a shutoff valve at its supply line — usually a small chrome quarter-turn valve under sinks, behind toilets, and behind the washing machine. These let you cut water to one fixture without shutting down the house. If your fixtures don’t have them, that is a clear upgrade target. They run $8 to $15 each at the hardware store.
Beyond the main shutoff, look for a water heater shutoff (cold side, above the heater) and an outdoor irrigation shutoff if you have a sprinkler system. In freezing climates, exterior hose bibs have an interior shutoff with a drain to prevent winter pipe bursts.
Reading a Plumbing Diagram
Plumbing diagrams use specific symbols. Hot water lines appear as solid red or labeled “HW,” cold as solid blue or “CW.” Drain lines show as thicker black lines with arrows indicating flow direction. Vents appear as dashed lines extending upward from drain points. Cleanouts (capped access points) show as small circles with X marks.
If you don’t have your home’s original plans, you can sketch your own diagram in 30 minutes by walking each room and tracing visible pipe runs. Photograph what you find behind access panels and at the water meter. This becomes the most valuable document you own when something goes wrong.
Common Configurations by House Type
Single-story homes typically have one main stack near the bathroom serving the toilet, sink, and tub, with a kitchen branch tying in further down. Two-story homes often have stacks aligned vertically — upstairs bathroom directly over downstairs bathroom or kitchen — to share the stack and reduce labor.
Slab foundation homes route most plumbing through the slab, which makes leaks expensive to repair (jackhammer the floor or reroute through the attic). Crawlspace and basement homes have accessible plumbing from below, which is why most repairs in those homes cost half as much.
Common Problems and What the Diagram Reveals
Slow drain in one fixture: clog in the trap arm or branch drain near that fixture. Multiple slow drains on one floor: the branch they share has a clog or the vent for that branch is blocked. Sewer smell at a fixture: dry P-trap (run water for 30 seconds) or a failed vent allowing sewer gas backflow.
Water hammer (banging pipes): the supply line has trapped air or missing arrestors. Adding a quarter-turn shutoff valve with a built-in hammer arrester ($15) at the noisy fixture solves this in five minutes.
When You Need a Plumber Anyway
Knowing the system saves money on small repairs but does not replace a licensed plumber for major work. Anything involving the main supply, sewer line outside the house, or gas-line water heater replacement requires a permit and a licensed pro in most jurisdictions. Even with permits ignored, insurance won’t cover damage from unpermitted work — and that’s a five-figure problem when something fails.
