Every walk-in shower drain plumbing diagram tells the same basic story: water falls through a strainer, drops into a trap, and rides a sloped pipe to the main stack while a vent keeps the trap from siphoning dry. Once you can read a walk-in shower drain plumbing diagram in your head, you can rough in a shower without staring at a printout taped to a stud. I have plumbed well over a hundred showers, and the same five dimensions decide whether the inspector signs off or makes you cut concrete twice.

A good walk-in shower drain plumbing diagram covers the drain size, the trap, the trap arm, the vent connection, and the slope of the finished floor above it all. This guide walks through each element in plain words, with the actual numbers you need, so you can visualize the whole assembly from strainer to stack even without a picture in front of you.

Start With the Drain Size: 2 Inches, No Exceptions

Code is blunt on this one. The IPC and UPC both require a 2-inch drain for a shower, and that is the pipe diameter, not the strainer size. A tub can get away with 1-1/2 inch because the tub itself stores water and releases it slowly, but a walk-in shower dumps 2 to 2.5 gallons per minute directly at the floor. Modern rain heads and dual-head setups can push 4 gallons per minute or more, and a 1-1/2 inch line will pond water at your ankles.

Converting an old tub to a walk-in shower is where most people get caught. The existing tub drain is almost always 1-1/2 inch, which means you are cutting the floor open and replacing the branch back to a 2-inch fitting. Budget for that from the start. On a slab, that means a concrete saw, a rented jackhammer or a rotary hammer with a spade bit, and roughly 2 to 3 feet of trenching to reach the existing line.

Picture the P-Trap: Location and Depth

Directly below the drain body sits a 2-inch P-trap. In your mental diagram, the trap sits with its weir — the inside curve where water spills over — 6 to 10 inches below the finished floor in typical joist framing. The trap must be as close to directly under the drain as possible; a vertical tailpiece of a few inches between the drain body and trap inlet is normal, but long horizontal offsets above the trap invite gunk buildup and gurgling.

Two rules matter here:

  • The trap seal must hold 2 to 4 inches of water. Standard 2-inch P-traps are built to this spec, so use a real trap, never a flexible accordion fitting.
  • Glued (solvent-weld) traps are required under floors in most jurisdictions. Slip-joint traps are for accessible locations like sink cabinets, not buried shower lines.

On a slab, the trap sits in a hand-dug pocket below the drain, bedded in gravel, with the riser coming up through the concrete pour or the pan mortar.

The Trap Arm: Length and Fall

Downstream of the trap, a horizontal section called the trap arm carries water to the vent connection. Draw this in your head as a straight 2-inch run pitched at 1/4 inch per foot. Under the IPC, a 2-inch trap arm can run up to 8 feet before it must hit a vent; the UPC limits it to 5 feet. Check which code your state adopted before you frame anything.

Slope discipline matters in both directions. Less than 1/4 inch per foot leaves solids behind. Much more than 1/2 inch per foot lets water outrun the waste and can pull the trap seal by siphon action. The other hard rule: the total fall across the trap arm cannot exceed the pipe diameter, so a 2-inch arm can drop at most 2 inches over its entire run before venting. That is what actually caps the length in practice.

Where the Vent Ties In

The vent rises from the top of the fitting at the end of the trap arm — a sanitary tee turned on its back is the classic move, though a wye with a 45 rolled up above the horizontal centerline also passes. From there, a 1-1/2 inch vent runs vertically inside a wall, staying vertical until it is at least 6 inches above the flood rim of the highest fixture on the system before it can go horizontal to join another vent or the stack.

Skip the vent and the shower still drains — badly. You get the glug-glug sound, slow drainage, and eventually a siphoned trap that lets sewer gas into the bathroom. If there is no practical wall to carry a vent, an air admittance valve (AAV, brand name Studor) is legal in many areas when installed accessibly at least 4 inches above the trap arm, but a handful of jurisdictions still prohibit them, so ask your inspector first.

Center Drain Layout

With a center or offset point drain, the diagram above the trap is a four-way funnel. The finished floor slopes to the drain from all directions at 1/4 inch per foot, which means a 5-foot shower needs about 5/8 inch of total drop from the walls to a centered drain. The drain body itself is usually a two-part clamping-ring assembly for PVC-liner pans: a lower flange glues to the trap riser, the pan liner sandwiches between flanges, and weep holes let moisture that penetrates the mortar bed escape into the drain.

Keep those weep holes clear. Pea gravel or plastic spacers around the barrel before you pack the top mud bed is a 50-cent detail that prevents the musty, perpetually damp pan that plagues bad installs. If you are using a bonded-flange drain with a sheet-membrane system instead, the weep holes disappear entirely — the waterproofing happens at tile level and the flange solvent-welds or clamps straight to the riser, which simplifies the mental diagram considerably.

Linear Drain Layout

A linear drain changes the geometry, not the plumbing. The trench-style channel — common lengths are 24, 32, 36, and 48 inches — sits against one wall or across the entry, and the entire floor becomes a single plane sloping in one direction at 3/16 to 1/4 inch per foot. One plane means large-format 24-by-48 tile becomes possible, which is the real reason designers spec these.

Below the channel, the outlet is still a single 2-inch connection to the same P-trap, trap arm, and vent described above. Two placement notes from the field:

  • Wall-adjacent drains keep the trap near the wall plate, so confirm your joist bay or slab trench actually reaches that spot before you commit.
  • Most linear bodies need 3 to 4 inches of vertical depth below finished floor, slightly more than a point drain, which matters in shallow 2×8 joist bays.

Curbless Showers: Where the Depth Goes

Drop the curb and every vertical number tightens. A curbless walk-in needs the entire sloped pan recessed below the surrounding floor, which means either dropping the subfloor between joists with a recessed pan kit, sistering joists to support a lowered deck, or in slab construction, depressing the pour by 1-1/2 to 2 inches in the shower footprint. The trap and arm still need their 6-plus inches below that, so verify total depth before promising anyone a zero-threshold entry.

In joist framing, run the trap arm parallel to the joists whenever you can. Boring a 2-3/8 inch hole for 2-inch pipe through a 2×10 is legal in the middle third of the span, but three of those holes in a row will earn a red tag and a sistering job.

Rough-In Checklist Before You Close Anything

Before the pan goes in or the slab gets patched, walk this list:

  1. Drain riser is 2-inch, plumb, and centered within 1/8 inch of the planned strainer location.
  2. Trap is solvent-welded, supported, and holds water — cap the riser and run a 10-foot head water test or 5 psi air test as your inspector requires.
  3. Trap arm slope measures 1/4 inch per foot with a level, not by eye.
  4. Vent tie-in is above the arm’s centerline and within 5 or 8 feet per your code.
  5. Riser height matches your drain body spec — Schluter, Oatey, and linear bodies each want a different stub-up, typically flush to 1/2 inch above subfloor.

Get those five items right and the diagram in your head becomes a shower that drains fast, stays quiet, and never lets a whiff of sewer gas past the trap. Rush any of them and you will be reading this again with a demolition hammer in hand.
